"Murder Behind The Badge"

As a former police officers daughter, I know firsthand the fear and trauma associated in living with a man that used his badge, ultimately committing murder. In the 5th grade our class was given an assignment to write a poem about our lives. I wrote:

This man who drinks and carries a gun, each night he’d come home it would be no fun.

That badge, that gun, we have no place to run.

In my 20 years advocating police perpetrated homicide the horrors of living with a violent abusive police officer, those committing unspeakable acts of murder were, until now, silently buried with the victims.

Finally, Author and former detective and Women In Crime Ink Contributor Stacy Dittrich has written Murder Behind the Badge profiling police officers who kill for love and money, to the ones who kill over simple personnel complaints; included among other are the stories of Drew Peterson, Bobby Cutts, Ken Dekleine, Richard DiGuglielmo, and Lawrencia Bambenek.
These are stories of the men and women who abused their power, took human life, and will forever pay the consequence.

This book is a must read for police officers entering the academy to criminal justice students and those whom desire the truth within the "blue world."

Safety is an Illusion

As a nation we would receive a failing grade in the war against violence in the home. Twenty years ago I had tremendous hope that violence would be a battle won when I signed on to change the world and the stop bloodshed. I was wrong. The magnitude of murder, rape, parental alienation, fear, power and control is an epidemic consuming the lives of families.

Over the weekend an article appeared saying “domestic violence laws need review.” How ridiculous I thought to myself, to review what has never been effective, waste more time and in the process more women will continue to die in their own homes. All the studies are a waste of valuable time that many as I write this simply do not have. An order of protection if you are lucky enough to get one means little without the police, prosecutors and a no tolerance community enforcement of that piece of paper. Granted a court order has saved lives, but in my opinion not enough to fill a gymnasium. I can give a long list of those who did not make it and died because we do not have answers. Instead services are like a patch-work quilt poorly sewn together because there is a lack of commitment and most importantly funding for those in the trenches who are fighting to keep women and children alive, barely, one at a time.

You have women gathered on the internet desperately seeking direction, support advice or help for a lawyer to represent them like human beings or to keep their abuser away from the kids. How about the mom who stayed home to raise her children and cannot even scrape together gas money or car fare to attend a hearing for a court order or a divorce hearing where if she does not show up she defaults like at a spots game losing her home, kids and any financial ability to move forward. If it is a divorce she is the one who must pay child support and continue going to court for issues that are nothing more than a game of clear abuse. With ill skilled court personal playing a game that as of late in leading to death.

Then yet another article appeared “the war at home: domestic violence takes a shocking toll”. What rock has everyone been living under? Where are the articles following the woman pleading in a court of law for an order of protection when she is denied? Where are the reporters asking the important questions to the prosecuting attorney’s , judge's and so called mental health "experts" whom are not doing their jobs? Where is the follow-up after the murders of Jack and Duncan Connelly? Why aren’t the people who investigate and bring us our nightly dose of news demanding answers in a dangerous legal system instead of following live coverage of 30-minute car chases?

Cases such as Drew Peterson have generated lots of dollars for networks and advertising sponsors and will continue to do so when his trial begins sometime this year. Why not gear up and send reporters out to the war torn court houses of America and report accurately on the conditions in which women alive and dead are fighting for their lives.

It is upsetting to see troops rally in the form of doctors and public officials when the media reports the onset of reported flu outbreaks in a few states usually amounting to about 20 people causing folks to take action. And yet we have hundreds of thousands of women murdered or terrorized in their homes and they can not even get carfare to save their lives!

The Unsolved Murder of Brittany Phillips

Brutally raped and murdered, Brittany Phillips will never get the chance to experience her mother's warm embrace again. While away at Tulsa Community College, Brittany and her mother, Margaret Zingman, regularly talked every Monday and Thursday. These weekly phone calls would soon end the night a police officer knocked onDr. Margaret Zingman's door, to inform her that her daughter had been raped and murdered.

For Brittany's mother, such violence against her daughter is all too familiar. "All my work did not prepare me for the events of Sept. 30, 2004"

As a psychologist at Mabel Basset Correctional Center, and a trauma therapist for 17 years, Dr.Margaret Zingman could never imagine her personal experiences and work with other victims would run parallel with the death of her daughter. The stories she hears on a daily basis from the women she works with is now a harsh reality for her. Join us as we hear from a remarkable mother caravanning across the county to create awareness and “catch a killer.”

Alice Doesn't Live There Anymore

The murder of Alice Morrin, wife mother and former fox news assignment editor was one of the most viewed tragedies of the day. She died on Sunday evening as she was texting a friend for help.

You could feel the fear as Alice says to the friend she is texting, where her children are in the home while she is attempting to escape upstairs as her husband has both a knife and a shotgun in his possession, shouting in anger his intentions to kill her. Alice’s mind no doubt races to thoughts of her 2 daughters hiding, hoping they are safe in the house. We do not know what Alice was thinking, but we do know she was pleading for her life.

We will never know what a woman counting moments like the ticking of a second hand on a watch about to be killed is thinking. Or the days, hours and years building up to a life of fear resulting in an unimaginable tragedy.

This is not a story but a human being who fought for her life literally with her last breath. This is a tragedy most would rather not read or gloss over and pretend they understand what it is like to live and wear fear like a garment of clothing that is virtually impossible to remove. Or criticize and perhaps points fingers in blame thinking “Alice was smart enough” or Alice should have had the sense to get out sooner” or if only Alice had told someone she might still be alive.” If only, if only, if only-are words that have no meaning to a victim of domestic violence often forced into a powerless life. Alice Morrin was in the middle of a divorce, she could no longer live her life in fear. Many women are not prepared as they end the relationship, often dropping their guard down because they feel a false sense of empowerment or security in knowing freedom is around the corner.

Seeking a divorce is dangerous unless a self defense strategy to remain alive is included prior to seeking the services of an attorney or filing the paperwork yourself to end the relationship.

Alice Morrin will never fix another meal for her daughters. Alice will never help her daughter's with their homework assignments. Alice will not be available in person to celebrate her daughters birthdays.

Alice has a new address, permanent residency in a cemetary.

If you are in an abusive relationship, you need a plan, not a cemetary plot!

Moving out, Moving on will guide you through the necessary steps of ending a relationship safely.

Mother's Losing Custody on The Susan Murphy Milano Show

In April, 2009, over at Women In Crime Ink I wrote about Amy Leichtenberg who filed orders of protection against Michael Connolly more than once after his repeated physical and emotional abuse in the later years of their marriage. Amy filed for divorce that year and moved out of their home. In a 2006, a petition for a protective order against her husband was filed, saying that his "controlling and obsessive behavior" included threats to kill himself and others along with a series of bizarre demands he made of her. Within a 15-month period, Connolly violated the orders of protection 57 times. He killed both children Jack age 7 and Duncan age 9.

Another form of abuse is referred to as parental alienation, but it is “maternal deprivation abuse” that is when a father makes Mommy pay for wanting to leave the relationship. It also happens during divorce in family court. The abusive husband does everything in their power to make mom crazy, unfit, insane and convinces court appointed mediators, judges and mental health experts to give them custody. This goes beyond parental alienation and the children who grow up without their mothers in these cases grow up to a world of hurt, anger, pain and destruction. Or they wind up murdered by their parent.

It is an epidemic. The legal system is enabling an abuser to continue using money, manipulation and control all because his wife wanted away from her violent relationship or to simply end the marriage.

Meal Ticket was the Verdict-Not Justice!

California laws regarding Domestic Violence are considered strict as opposed to other states. They should be quite complex and carry with them serious conviction penalties. Perhaps the State Legislators should amend the law to include the words “crimes committed by celebrities including sports players” shall be prosecuted.

When you are charged with two felony counts as Chris Brown --(somehow the other one magically vanished in court) -- it is imperative you enter the courtroom prepared with someone like Mark Geragos, a strong defense attorney.
It should not matter that these so called strong domestic violence and stalking laws were passed into legislation because women, mothers and girlfriends found themselves in an emergency room or on a slab tagged at the county morgue.

Yes all the fans can jump up and down screaming victory for their kroner making a deal with the districts attorney’s office by pleading guilty to only one count of felony assault and provided with a free get out of jail card. But this is not a game of monopoly it is real life. I am certain if this happened to a relative or family member you would not be cheering and likely demanding justice. But we still as a society do not see this type of violence between intimate relationships as a potentially deadly crime. Blood, gushing out of Rihanna’s mouth as Brown continued to punch her while in route to the Grammy awards her head held down below the steering wheel as he told her “I am going to beat the shit out of you when we get home” implying this was not the first time Brown solved his manly issues with a young woman half his size and strength with violence.

Chris Brown in court yesterday, head bowed with hands folded like a choir boy as he pleaded guilty looking all manly in his designer threads before the judge.

It was obvious Defense attorney Mark Geragos relationships with the system that included the Judge and District Attorney in Los Angeles showing the world he knows how to aggressively pursue alternative sentencing, for his famous, yet cowardly client.

We witnessed firsthand, a verdict from an industry that sets itself apart from the realities of relationship dynamics. Chris Brown sings for a lot of folk’s suppers and that "meal ticket" was the verdict, not justice!

"One Size Does Not Fit All"

When Patricia met Robert at their annual church social; it was love at first sight. They had so much in common. Sharing love for the ballet, music, food and most importantly they shared the same dream; they were both looking for that special someone to spend the rest of their lives with. Someone who believed in family, God & children--to them it was important to have a strong foundation. Each came from good, hard working Christian families and they wished for the same happiness their parents had shared throughout their marriages. Patricia and Robert dated for over a year when Robert asked for Patricia's hand in marriage.

While telling her story, if only for a brief moment Patricia's eyes reflected on a happier time in her life. Patricia begins when Robert proposed. We had just learned that Robert was offered a job as a financial analyst with a large investment banking institution. Robert wanted to really go out on the town and celebrate. I was so happy for him; I went out and bought a new dress. Robert was very secretive about how we would celebrate his new job. The next weekend we drove about two hundred miles. I knew by the highway signs we were headed to Chicago. When we arrived at the restaurant, Robert excused himself. When he returned he handed me an envelope. When I opened the envelope, I wanted to just scream out loud. Inside, there were two tickets to see my all-time favorite performer in the whole world, Tony Orlando. I couldn't believe my eyes. And they were front row seats to boot. I could hardly get through dinner knowing we were going to see Tony Orlando. I have to say when we were seated for the show, I had goose bumps.

After the first song, Mr. Orlando reached into the audience with his hand and asked me to come up to the stage. When I turned to look at Robert, he'd left his seat. I was actually on the stage with this handsome hunk of a man. Then he asked the audience for their cooperation for a moment. Then Mr. Orlando turned me around to the back of the stage. "Do you know this young man approaching," he asked. I couldn't say a word, I was frozen. "Ladies and gentlemen, the person coming on stage is Robert and he has something to ask this very special lady." Mr. Orlando said hello to Robert, handed him the microphone and said. "It's all yours my man." And then, what seemed to be before the entire world, Robert got on his knees and proposed. When I accepted the crowd of strangers stood up and cheered. Then, from the audience, my family and Robert's family came up on stage to congratulate us. We set a date and married in our town church shortly after.

Things happened so fast, with the wedding, sending out resumes for a job, and then trying to find a place to live. We were going crazy. I was so excited when I found a good paying job; everything was falling directly into place.
After a few months, Robert began acting strange. He'd blow up when he thought I misplaced his shaver, or his socks weren't matched and still sitting in the laundry basket. You know stupid little things like that. One night, I had to stay late at work and finish a project. When I walked in the door Robert was sitting with the channel changer in one hand and a beer in the other.
"Can't you come straight home from work just once?"
When I tried to calm him down he threw his beer and the channel changer at the television and stormed out of the apartment.
The next morning he apologized for blowing up and said he was under a lot of pressure at work.

He asked me to forgive him. A few weeks later, the girls from work made plans to go out for a night on the town. I didn't think it was such a big deal. Robert was going to a basketball game with some people from work and I really didn't feel like staying home by myself. When I came home, Robert had just arrived.

"Where have you been?" "I went out with some girls after work, why?" "Those bimbos who go out and meet men like whores. Is that what you want to do? Is that what you like? Cause if it is, you can go out that door."
I was stunned and hurt by Robert's words. When I called home for some comforting reassurance, I was amazed as to how hard it was to lie and say how fine everything was going between Robert and I.

A few months later we learned I was pregnant. When I shared the news with Robert, he was so excited. Then at dinner that evening he asked when I was going to give my notice at work. "I thought I'd work until the baby is born." "Absolutely not," he said. "No wife of mine is going to work while she is pregnant." So, at his insistence, I gave my notice and began looking for a house. I thought things would get better, but Robert grew more irritated and impatient. When we brought our son home from the hospital, the baby would wake up nights and cry and Robert would get upset. Nothing I did seemed right. If dinner wasn't on the table the moment he walked in the door, he would scream louder then the baby. If my hair wasn't fixed the way he liked me to keep it, he would accuse me of not caring anymore. If he'd call during the day from work and I wasn't home, he would demand to know who I was with that day. I couldn't understand. I loved him so much, why was he treating me this way? I continued to ask God for guidance, but somehow it didn't stop the hurt I felt inside.

I went to my pastor, he told me to continue praying and to reach out to family members for support. I called my sister and explained what was going on, she didn't believe me. She said I needed to pay more attention to Robert. So, I took her advice and tried to make things better at home. After our second child was born, I hardly left the house. And I had no time for myself.
One night Robert came home from work late. He'd been drinking. He demanded I put the children to bed. When I didn't get off the couch fast enough, he slapped me. "Did you hear what I said? What part didn't you understand?" I stood up, stunned, put the children to bed, locked the door to the den and went to sleep. The next day Robert left for work before I got up. That afternoon a dozen roses arrived with a note from Robert saying he was sorry. For a couple of weeks things were great, but that didn't last long. One night after I put the kids to bed he wanted to fool around. I was just too tired. I had been up for two nights straight while the kids took turns with the flu. When I pushed Robert's hand away, he became angry, accusing me of having an affair. Then before I knew it, he pulled the belt from his pants and began beating me with it. I screamed for him to stop; the more I screamed the harder he hit me. Then he began shouting, "You little bitch, you little bitch, defy me will you, this will teach you. I'm your husband, you do what I say when and where I want, do you understand me." In the background you could hear the children screaming.

Suddenly there was a heavy knock at the door. "Open up, police, open the door now." Robert got up turned around to go to the door, he pulled a comb out of his back pocket combed his hair and tried to straighten his appearance before he answered. The officer demanded to be let in the house. He made his way around Robert into the corner of the living room where he found me hovering in the corner. The officer slowly helped me from the floor onto the sofa. Then he gave his partner the order to cuff Robert. "But you're making a mistake, you can't do this, what do you think you're doing?" Robert said. He kept going on an on about his rights. Shortly afterwards the paramedics arrived to treat my injuries. Surprisingly, everyone was so nice. When the officer insisted I go to the hospital, I refused. "I'll be fine," I explained. "And besides, I have no one to leave the children with." I was so numb and terrified, I didn't know what to do and everything everyone was saying wasn't registering.

I was this grown woman, with two small children, a responsible individual. How could I have allowed this to happen? Why didn't I see? What did I do to provoke this outburst? Why was God allowing this to continue? How much more I can take, I thought. Before the officer left, he gave me telephone numbers of where to get further assistance. When I got the children back in bed and settled, I sat at the kitchen table just staring at the sheet of paper that was given to me. I decided to give one of the numbers a try. When I asked about services, I was told that they were full, try back in a week. I continued calling the other hotline numbers. I kept getting the same response, "Sorry, we're full." HOME, SWEET HOME Feeling as though I had no other alternatives, I decided to call my mom. I decided to go home for a visit. When I went to the bathroom to get cleaned up, I was horrified. My face was swollen and bruised, my neck, arms and back was raw and red with a lot of my skin broken. Then I called the police station where my husband had been taken. They informed me that it would be around noon the following day before he sees a judge and bail is set. When I got the strength and my second wind, I packed up the jeep with some of the kids' toys and clothes.
We left early the next morning for my parents' house. When we finally arrived, my parents came out to help me along with the family pastor. The expression on my parents' faces was one of horror. My father wanted to find Robert and teach him a lesson for harming his little girl. We got settled, I sat with my parents and my pastor and we talked things out. The Pastor suggested I write down what I needed to do. And before he left we all got down on our knees and prayed together. I pulled out the yellow pages and looked up legal assistance offices, women's groups and attorneys. I spent the next four hours on the phone. Everywhere I called wanted personal information or history before they would even speak with me. Then I was told no one would be able to contact me for a few weeks because they were booked. Then I began calling private attorneys everyone was pretty matter of fact. The first questions were about resources, net worth, what was my current financial status. And unless I had twenty-five hundred dollars for a retainer when I walked in, they wouldn't help me. So I decided to call around to the various churches for direction. I found them very supportive and helpful.

After dinner that evening Robert called and demanded to speak with me. "She's not here," my father said. Robert kept calling and when my father had had enough, he blew. "Listen, you call here again and I will call the police. Stay away from me and my family." After the children were asleep, my parents and I resumed our conversation and we discussed what I wanted to do and what was best for all concerned. It was a blessing that my parents were willing to do anything they could to help me, and for the first time I didn't feel alone. The next day, someone from a church office returned my call. I was asked so many questions, I felt confused. There seemed to be so much to do that I wasn't aware of because I had never been in this situation before. That afternoon, I scheduled an appointment with an attorney recommended by a local church. ROBERT'S RIGHTS The first thing the attorney did was to take pictures of me with an instant camera. Then he explained my legal options and alternatives. He also tried to prepare me for what might happen. He suggested that this was not going to be easy; I wasn't going to just be able to get rid of this man and throw him out of my life. He said Robert had rights too even though he's committed a crime. The attorney wanted me to understand that because we had children, Robert had a right to be a part of their lives. And that even if I had sole custody, Robert, under the law, had a right to visitation. Then after we finished our meeting the attorney asked if I would pray with him. I was very confused, but for the first time I felt God's presence with me. All of this seemed as though it was happening so fast. The attorney suggested that because I didn't have an Emergency Order of Protection that we fill out the paperwork in his office, head over to the court building and get one now. He indicated that we would have no problem based on my injuries and police reports. I was so scared. I had never set foot in a courtroom before; it was cold and smelled like damp, musty wood.

It was nothing like you see on television, except the "All rise" when the judge enters the courtroom. When my name was called, my attorney gently guided me by the arm and we went in front of the judge. My attorney spoke first. "Your honor I'm... representing my client. As you can see before you judge, my client has been badly beaten. We are here today to obtain an emergency order of protection for her and the children. In addition, we ask the court to grant temporary custody to my client pending the outcome of a divorce, your honor." Then the judge spoke, "Clerk, swear in the witness." "Raise your right hand, do you solemnly swear to tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth, so help you God?" "I do," I replied. Then the clerk held up a piece of paper and asked if that was my signature. "Yes," I stated. Then for the record I was asked to state my name, address and age. The judge asked me to briefly explain what happened. When my attorney told the judge it was in the paperwork before him, the judge told him to be quiet and asked me to answer the question. I tried to explain, but I couldn't. I lost it and began crying. Slam, went the judge's gavel. "The court will take a brief recess while the witness composes herself." "I'm sorry," I told my attorney." Did I make him angry?" "No,” a gentle voice he replied," just calm down and we'll try again." When the court was called back to order the judge reappeared from the side door of the court. He looked down at me. "Are we ready to proceed"? "Yes your honor," I replied. I tried taking a few deep breaths in between sentences to explain what Robert had done and that I was in fear for my life. When I finished the judge spoke. "The court finds in favor of granting an emergency order of protection based on the witness's testimony and physical injuries apparent before this court. The court further orders that the witness be granted temporary custody of the minor children. Next return date in 21 days. Good luck." Then he tapped his gavel and the court person called the next case. When I asked why we had to return back to court the attorney explained that Robert would have to appear before the judge and my order would then be renewed depending on the circumstances of my case. There was so much I wanted to ask, but I didn't want to take any more of my attorney's time and most of all I didn't want to appear stupid.

A few days later Robert appeared at my parents' house, demanding to speak with me. My father refused to let him in the house. The following night my parents and I were awakened by a large noise outside. When I peeked out the upstairs bedroom window, I spotted Robert's car down the street. I began screaming, "its Robert, he's back." My father ordered us to stay in the house and to contact the police. You could hear my father having it out on the front lawn with Robert. It was also obvious that Robert had been drinking. When my father turned around to go back in the house, we heard a loud noise like a car backfiring. Then all was quiet. I called 911 again, trying to get assistance. I heard my mother whisper to stay put. When the police arrived, they found my father unconscious lying with a bullet wound to his back. Robert was nowhere in sight. The police immediately put out an all points bulletin on the radio. They were throwing so many questions at us. They wanted a description of Robert, the car, what we saw. Several minutes later a call for backup came over the police radio. It sounded like they had Robert in sight going 90 miles an hour on the state highway. You could hear the chase like a made for television movie. It sounded like several cars were in pursuit of my husband all at one time. When the ambulance came, my mother went with my father to the hospital. An hour or so later a squad car pulled up to the house. The officer approached me. "Yes," I replied. "We're checking, but we believe we've located Robert. We'll know in just a few minutes." The following day, the doctors took my father off the critical list and moved him to a regular room. I was still in shock with the news that Robert was dead. According to the police, while in pursuit of Robert who was going at a high speed, his car went out of control, sliding off the road and over a bridge. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Even though he was gone, the memory of the violence and the anger I felt were still inside of me. You would think it just goes away, but it doesn't. I learned that I had to deal with all of this. That meant there had to be a conclusion to all of this. It's taken over a year through therapy just to get past the violence and why he did this. I still have a long way to go and with the assistance of professional counseling there is hope that I will recover and begin again to rebuild my life.

Patricia's story ends with the tragic death of her husband, but she still has much to grieve from the abuse she received as well as his death. She has since remarried and volunteers at a local women's shelter.

HOW YOU CAN HELP Someone: The most important thing you can do for a friend or family member who's being abused is to let the person know you care. They need to know that you are there for them, no matter what.

If you see signs or specific behavior patterns in a loved one or friend, you cannot look away. Here are some things to be alert to.

Is she:
*Not coming to family gatherings or outings?
*Making excuses for not showing up when they're expected?
*Wearing clothes that hide arms and legs during hot weather.
*Appearing irritable or depressed?
*Talking about trouble in the relationship?
*Openly admitting emotional, physical or sexual abuse?

These are all signs of abuse. If someone is trying to reach out to you for help, don't pass it off as a one time incident. Abuse is against the law; these are not accidents, they are crimes. If you choose to ignore appeals for help, she could be killed, and there will be no more choices to make, except to pick up the pieces.

Listen to the person who comes to you for assistance or advice.
Don't judge her.
Do not minimize the extent of what she says is going on.
Abuse is not a "One Size Fits All" Solution. Like our own fingerprints no two cases of abuse are the same. Our society does not make it okay for anyone to say "I need help" or I am a victim of abuse or a broken relationship", when there is so much contempt for weakness and submissiveness.

The names, addresses and telephone numbers of programs and agencies who assist victims of domestic violence are located in your phone book under social service agencies. Or you can search the internet. Sit down at the kitchen table with her, take paper and pen and help her with a safety plan or to set goals. Let her know you will help and support her in every way. If you know someone who is being abused, but you are fearful of confronting that person, send them information anonymously. Don't look the other way. Do something!

The book Time's up will be in bookstores and online in July of 2009. It is a comprehensive guide
geared towards those in abusive, stalking and officer involved domestic acts of violence.

And as always, if you turn on the volume on your computer from this site, you will hear the latest life altering radio show provides tools and a roadmap to leave your abusive and violent relationship.

Stud Muffin Drew Peterson

Looking like a rock star, the front of the Chicago Sun-Times decided this front page cover of Drew Peterson was appropriate on Mother's Day. I guess stories about courageous women or something to mark today's special day doesn't sell as many newspapers as the stud muffin and dickless wonder, Drew Peterson.

The Levi Page Show will be Taking calls Live this evening, on Mothers's dayfor the entire hour as we discuss and go inside the Drew Peterson arrest. Drew Peterson was nabbed for the murder of the third wife Kathleen Savio.

Do You Know If You Are In Danger?

For some reason we all step outside of ourselves when something breaks down in our lives, especially when we are in a dangerous, toxic and potentially letal relationship. Oh yes, we read all stories about women like Stacy Peterson, Lisa Stebic, Theresa Parker, Barbara Vanaman, Rosa Lisowski, Renee Pernice and so many others and think I don't have it so bad. I am not in danger. Or he would never go that far and kill me? But when we are in the thick of the abuse, we get numb to what has become common. The yelling, screaming an ocassional argument that from time to time gets abusive.

Fact is if you are in an abusive relationship, you are wearing so many layers of shame, guilt, anger, frustration and hopelessness it is a daily routine no different then dressing each day. Do you want to continue to wear unheathly and toxic clothing?

Or do you want to do something about your situation? Look at the questions below. If you answer yes to one of them, you are in a toxic and potentially letal environment.
Is the person you are in a relationship with upset you have other friends?
Are they displeased at your accomplishments and ambitions?
Does the person shut down when you start a conversation?
Do the person refuse to talk and listen when they are upset you?
Is your husband or partner unable to express affection except when they want, or during intimate moments?

Does the person put down your relatives or friends?
When they are angry, do they break or throw things?
Do they bring up other men in your past life and imply you still love that person?
During a converation are you allowed to form an opinion?
When you do something they do not like and you are hit or verbally abused, do you accept it and make excuses for their bad behavior?
Are you constantly questioned about where you where and with whom when you are at work or out of the home?
Are you expected to have dinner on the table at a certain time, or else?
Are you called names like dumb, fat, lazy, ugly or worthless?
Are there some qualities you especially like about yourself that they disapprove of or ridicules?
Do they ridicule or insult your religion, race, heritage, or class?
Have they withheld approval, appreciation, or affection as punishment?
Are you humiliated in private or public by this person?
Does this person refuse to interact with you in public?
If you have children how are they treated by the person? Do they love and cherish the kids or do they insult, degrade and use punishment that is abusive?
At home or in poublic does the person tell vular jokes that aere embarassing and humilating about the opposite sex?
Does he tell anti-woman jokes or make demeaning remarks about women?
Have you ever rehearsed what you will say so they don't blow up, get anrgy or use you as a punching bag because they did not like what you said or did and they want to teach you a lesson?
At the snap of a finger does the person go from loving and wonderful to anger and range without warning and for no reason?
Are you blamed for eveything that goes wrong from the car breaking down to the kids getting sick to the basement flooding.
Now what do you do? Where do you go? How do you begin?
Do you fear the person with you whom you are with for your safety or life?

Recognize that if abuse happens once, it happens again. So, know it and get away from it. Someone will be on the other side to help you. But most importantly, learn to love yourself.

“Don't be discouraged. It's often the last key in the bunch that opens the lock. Nobody trips over mountains. It is the small pebble that causes you to stumble. Pass all the pebbles in your path and you will find you have crossed the mountain."

America's Voiceless: The Children of Divorce

When 2 people begin a new relationship, it is as though Cinderella and her Prince have stepped out of the childhood story book we all read as kids.

A more realistic way to look at it is to think of it as two people who are running for office, campaigning to be in the other person's life. Forget that it is not who they will be later in life. We are too busy getting the other person to "choose us" so we can live happily ever after.

There is, bad habits early on in the relationship we never see. For instance, leaving dirty clothes scattered, drinking directly out of the juice carton, putting a dirty knife back in the drawer and watching from around the corner as they lick it clean, washing is too much effort. Both sides hide their bad habits when they begin dating, because they are too busy running for the highest office in the country, ultimately the office of marriage and parenthood.

This fantasy quickly fades as people grow together in a relationship. Unfortunately, about sixty percent grow apart during the marriage. When the marriage ends it is like a house set on fire. All desired hopes, dreams and commitment cherished by both sides, up in smoke. But, we forget that the child of this relationship has yet to lay the foundation of their lives.

Divorce on any level, is devastating. For children, their warm, safe world is suddenly shattered like a broken toy, in pieces. When parents begin to divorce, do they really stop and think about the children? All too often, the children fall under the invisible heading of "power base" or worse yet, "negotiable".A child's life during a divorce is like a roller coaster, going up minute and down the next. Parents are keeping score of their child's affection as though they were at a sporting event. Both parents fear losing ground as though their competition, the other parent, chips away at there own individual "power base". This is an automatic reaction during a divorce. If only parents would stop for a moment and realize, that children have unconditional love for each of them.

Children were not beamed down from space to earth. They were conceived and brought into this world with the greatest expectations, and most of all love. By two people the child calls mother and father. These two people have forgotten that being a parent, role model and teacher, means not putting down the other. Or using the children to emotionally beat up the "competition". Because, being a parent is a privilege!

A divorce is like a funeral. Of course, there is no casket or service. But the process is the same."Funeral" services begin when the parties enter their lawyers office, (I call them legal funeral representatives) they help prepare for the death of their clients marriage. The lawyers seek out personal, confidential information about you, only to file it in a public record for the world to see.Attached to this public record filing is a detailed financial description, (yours) of personal property and assets acquired during the marriage. Somewhere between page 11 or 15 of the divorce agreement, your children are listed, like an asset, by name and age. And on yet another page, you will find the "children", stating who gets custody when, on what days, with specific times and for how long. Can't forget the holiday schedules, this appears on yet another page of the divorce decree. This page looks more like a major event schedule, trading odd and even years off during the holidays. If parents would think for a moment and get off their "power base", they should be able to work out these very private details among themselves.

Months, and in some cases years later a judge, whom I refer to as the coroner (no disrespect intended) sit before strangers, in a court of law, with people whom once vowed to love, honor and cherish each other all the days of their lives, ask if all parties are in agreement, with the tap of his gavel, signs the death certificate (known more commonly as the divorce decree. I for one think this process is a crime. We allow total strangers to settle our once very happy lives. The greater crime, however, is the children, divided up among the parents like a piece of property.

Los Angeles Police Fails Child Abduction Case

On April 4, 2009, 10-year old Tomas Betsis-Dunstan from Pacific Palisades, was forcefully taken in what 5 witnesses say was a choke hold from his school by his father George Betsis and Australian businessman. The couple never married but there was long custody battle between the couple.

In addition, there is an ongoing investigation by Los Angeles child protective services are sexual in nature. Considering the imminent danger to Priscilla Dunston's own life the Los Angeles police department are refusing to do their jobs and issue a warrant. This includes the less than dynamic team within the Los Angeles County District Attorney Karen Strickland, who in my professional opinion is treating this case without importance to the life of 10-year of Tomas and his mother. If George Betsis planned and hired a private investigator for several months prior to abducting his son, Priscillia Dunston's life is in danger. This is classic domestic violence 101 and Damn the Los Angeles District Attorney's Office for refusing to do their job. Did they not learn from the murder of another victim, gunned down by her husband in January of 2008. Will they wait until blood starts dripping? And where is Steve Cooley hiding, under his official desk? Or is waiting for bloodshed before he writes an inter office memo to cover his Distrist Attorney behind?
Similar to the Jack and Duncan Connolly both taken during a visitation by their father who subsequently murdered the two young boys, the mother was not believed. The police as in this case allowed precious time to pass before finally releasing a missing person's number No. NR09175KS. But yet no amber alert.
In an interview airing early this morning Austrilia Time the father makes his case on television with this interview on the a curent affair exclusive. George Betsis is hiding out somplace an apartment in the Santa Monica, California area.
We will cover this case on Justice Interrupted Investigates, Tuesday, April 14, 2009 at 10:00 PM CST to discuss the issues that a parent faces when in a relationship and is unable to get police assitance or justice in the safe return of their children.

Rihanna Should Consider Being a Spokeswoman For Domestic Violence!

The article below is from an interview I gave on Rihanna and the release of the photo showing injuries she sustained from the beating she received at the hands of singer Chris Brown. In my opinion, the singer should go to every high school across the country and speak to young women regarding domestic violence. If it can happen to Rihanna, it can happen to anyone in an abusive relationship.

By ANTHONY McCARTNEY AP Entertainment Writer
LOS ANGELES (AP) - As police probe whether one of their own leaked a picture of a bruised and beaten woman that appears to be Rihanna, the image is sparking a discussion of the impact it could have on the issue of domestic violence. The celebrity Web site TMZ, which posted the photo Thursday night, did not explain its origin. The site wrote only that it was taken after an altercation between platinum-selling singer and her boyfriend, fellow pop star Chris Brown.
Los Angeles Police Chief William Bratton acknowledged Friday afternoon that the photo could prove embarrassing to the woman pictured, a view shared by some advocates for abused women. But in the welts and marks on the face of the woman in the photo, some also saw a teaching moment.

"If it could happen to Rihanna, it could happen to anyone," said Kim Gandy, president of the National Organization for Women. There are an estimated 4.8 million domestic violence attacks on women and another 2.9 million attacks on men each year, according to the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control.

"Maybe it is a good idea if it's her, if young girls see this," said Susan Murphy-Milano, a Chicago author and advocate for battered women. She said she hopes it makes them think, "Is the next picture going to be of her in a morgue?"

Both women expected the image, which even Bratton wouldn't go so far as to confirm was Rihanna, could spark a new awareness about domestic violence.
"The reality that domestic violence can happen to anyone, even someone with fame and celebrity, ought to bring home the point that this is a problem for our entire society," Gandy said. "We can't avoid or ignore it."

Bratton told reporters that along with launching an internal investigation into whether the photo is police evidence, he is also looking into how TMZ obtained the picture. He said the department may pursue a felony conspiracy case against TMZ and whomever might have helped them get the image.

Bratton said he suspected someone within the department leaked the photo, but did not elaborate or go so far as to confirm that it came from police evidence files.
"We are not treating this lightly," Bratton said. "It's an embarrassment to this department if in fact evidence was leaked.

"It's going to be a very painful experience for any personnel from this department and possibly those who they may have engaged in a conspiracy with to violate the laws of California."
TMZ did not say how it obtained the image and a publicist for the site did not return a phone or e-mail message seeking comment Friday.
Brown, 19, was arrested Feb. 8 on suspicion of making felony criminal threats, but police have not publicly identified his alleged victim. The woman was Rihanna, according to a person familiar with the situation, who was not authorized to speak publicly on the matter and requested anonymity.

A spokesman for Brown said the singer had no further comment beyond a statement released Sunday in which he said he was "sorry and saddened" about the incident. His attorney has not returned calls seeking comment.

Rihanna broke her silence on Friday, her 21st birthday, by releasing a statement through Rubenstein Associates.
"At the request of the authorities, Rihanna is not commenting about the incident involving Chris Brown," the statement read. "She wants to assure her fans that she remains strong, is doing well, and deeply appreciates the outpouring of support she has received during this difficult time."

The singer canceled a planned birthday bash in New York and postponed concerts overseas in the days following the incident.

Prosecutors are still waiting for police to present more evidence against Brown. Bratton said Friday that detectives are working quickly to finish that investigation, and the inquiries into the leak.

Both Gandy and Murphy-Milano said one of the reasons the photo's release is so shocking is because domestic violence isn't in the spotlight except for when it involves high-profile couples.
"Such a graphic image may give people pause and make them think about what we're doing for the women who don't have resources to escape and take care of themselves," Gandy said. She said the country's economic problems will translate into more domestic violence cases as families suffer financial strain.

And from a painful image, Murphy-Milano hoped a new advocate for battered women might have been made.

"I think she could be a very important voice and a tool for other people," she said of Rihanna. "She could turn this around," Murphy-Milano said, and tell others, "'Don't be me.'"

Woman Brings Children into a Blood Chilling True Crime Horror

Christina Raines

While the weather in Illinois is headed for below zero blood chilling temperatures, seems like my favorite yet to be arrested Drew Peterson has a new bed warmer. The 24-year moved into the Peterson home along with her 2 children.

Where is the father of her children? Does anyone know who the father is? Does this young woman have family?

It's obvious this is not a healthy environment for 2 kids swept into an unheathly environment by a woman who clearly is not playing with the porch light on, living with a man suspected of murder.

NBC Chicago did balance the piece with Stacy Peterson's sister on camera, Cassandra Cales .

The grand jury has resumed in this case and hopefully an arrest is on the horizon.

I guess this also means Peterson is no longer searching on those Internet dating sites we found him on recently.

NBC News Chicago: Singing the Praises of Drew Peterson?

NBC 5 News Chicago is broadcasting a "Day in the life of "Drew Peterson tonight on their news broadcast.

Maybe I under estimated the news worthy potential, filming a cowardly dickless wonder as he parades or floates across a room in the kitchen or bathroom cleaning toilet bowels or operating a vacuum cleaner in a home where a crime was likely committed. And a mother's life, erased.

So what can we expect to see from this high profile suspect and abuser? It's likely he will appear preparing his children's meals, doing domestic duty around the house, folding laundry, making beds, oh and smiling for the camera as he says "this is just an average day". Maybe we will get a glimse of the 23-year-old ( who needs a psych evaulation) to whom Peterson is engaged.

If NBC wants to do a "news" piece why not report on an investigation into the lives/deaths of Kathleen Savio and Stacy Peterson. How about interviewing Harry Smith the lawyer who represented Kathleen in her divorce and also met with Stacy to seek legal advice just days before her vanishing act in leaving Peterson. Or visiting the Will County States Attorney and doing a story on how the legal system failed both of these women, and what their office is doing differently. Or Illinois State Police and how they may have missed important evidence in the home during their search for evidence.

Parading this sick cowardly cop, a murder suspect, just feeds not only Peterson's sick abusive pattern but, others who are as I write this, plotting and planning to murder their wives and girlfriends all in the name of getting away with murder.

Everyone who read this needs to send an email of outrage to the reporter rob.stafford@nbcuni.com Or head over to the Drew Peterson blog where they list the direct cell phone number of the reporter here.

Protesting A Violent Inmates Parole

Susan Waller

Justice continues to be interrupted each time a victim of a horriffic crime is forced to go every few years and argue to a parole board in order for them to deny the release of a dangerous criminal.

In this case of which I am speaking a judge sentenced 3 men to 2 concurrent life sentences.

Each time they are up for parole, the victim, left for dead by these men must gather herself, travel to another state and speak in front of the group of strangers and re-live her nightmare all over again.

This inmate has been convicted of the crimes of rape in the first degree and attempted murder and has served only 22 years of two concurrent life sentences. Willis , a violent sex offender will not be capable of conforming to minimal standards of conduct within his community, and in fact poses a grave risk to society.

Susan Waller is asking that Mark Caselow Willis not be released from prison, and that he continue to serve the remainder of his original sentence.
