Cold Cases and Missing Persons Families

Everyday we receive requests to keep alive cases of the missing, suspected victims of intimate partner violence, and ultimately homicide, by featuring them on the blog or radio shows we do.

Sometimes it is virtually impossible to personally provide and answer all the emails or write about the lives of women and men caught in the silence of the abuse, power and control which they lived in daily, behind closed doors. We, as a nation, are at war in our own homes, a place once considered safe, for these women and men taken away from this earth before their time. Many a case goes cold because of lack of manpower, a proper investigation or not enough evidence to make an arrest.

The unexplained disappearances of just a few we list, out of the many thousands of missing and without answers, and all, in my opinion, victims of Intimate Partner Homicide:

Many of the aforementioned cases are listed, with additional information, at CUE Center for Missing Persons where they are registered as active cases. www.ncmissingpersons.org.  Agencies such as the CUE Center, a not for profit agency, depend on public donations to continue searching for those who suddenly vanish, without a trace.

We, as always, will continue to keep the lights on, as best as we can, for those who go missing. I ask that we all do our part and be messengers when we see or hear about a missing persons case, including supporting and commenting on sites and blogs. The national media pays attention more than you realize.

.Whatever you do, if you or someone you know is ending a relationship, leave and go someplace safe.  Do not stay once you have filed for a divorce or announced the relationship is over.  And for heaven's sake have a plan of action BEFORE, you say or do anything!

The dangers should be carefully considered when ending a dating relationship or marriage. The reaction to rejection is costing lives. In cases where the victim has died, her fears during the relationship or marriage remain silent, telling family or friends is considered "hearsay" and it's not enough when the person responsible is finally brought to trial. As a precaution, victims are encouraged to prepare the Evidentiary Abuse Affidavit and video, also known as the "EAA." This removes hearsay and in a victim's own words provides historical abuse documentation, gives law enforecment and prosecutors a profile of the offender and shows his pattern of conduct prior to the crime should the victim vanish or be killed.

Document the Abuse.Com contains vital information on how the EAA can support each case of abuse from the perspective of the first responders and advocates, to an appearance in court. It explains the legal benefits to the abuse victim, whether they are able to testify or not, how their words are forever documented and hold up in court, much like a Living Will.

Lisa Shuttlesworth Aikens South Carolina: Missing and Victim of Intimate Partner Violence

Lisa Shuttleworth, 34 the mother of two was supposed to pick up her son, Ryan, at the bus stop after school that afternoon, but in her stead an older family friend was there to meet him. Returning Ryan to his home, they found it locked and no sign of Lisa, although her car, along with a car she had borrowed, were still in her driveway. After Lisa’s parents were called they all entered the house and found no signs of struggle, and the only thing missing was her purse. It looked as if Lisa planned to return shortly, even a pot of tea was on the stove, her jewelry on the kitchen counter.

Lisa was a single mother, an excellent mother according to family sources, her two children knew they were loved, well taken care of, and that she would never leave them of her own free will. So what happened to Lisa?

This past weekend the CUE Center for Missing Persons, a national organizations that has been assisting families of missing persons since 1994, held their annual "Road To Remember Tour." Each year they go around the county highlighting and bringing attention to case's like Lisa Shuttleworth. This is one of the case's we will be featuring and working on in the coming weeks. In my opinion Lisa was a victim of Intimate partner violence resulting in homicide.

New Technology for Domestic Violence and Stalking Crimes

Technology is about to change the way victims of domestic violence and stalking will be able to document and video the abuse and potential threats against their lives. It is also a unique way, once the technology is used across the country, for abusers to think twice about making their spouse or girlfriend vanish without a trace. In her absence, if the victim has completed the process, called the "Evidentiary Abuse Affidavit"it will bring an arrest and a solid case for prosecutors.

This comes at time when the city of Topeka, Kansas just repealed the domestic violence law in the city. Their excuse is not having the money to prosecute crimes that can and are leading to murder of victims and their children. I expect other cities to follow cost saving methods, hopefully not as drastic as Topeka, which could include writing a simple ticket rather then making an arrest.

In many of the cases resulting in murder, where the victim and or children are killed, but the former husband or boyfriend remains alive and is awaiting trial, the victims fears and testimony in these cases is important for law enforcement and prosecution. The victims words are admitted into testimony at the trial as "last will and testament" rather then as in current cases "hearsay." Another important aspect is a victims words about the offender. Who they are and how the threats against life and limb were real while the victim was still alive. Removing the offenders right as per the sixth amendment to face the person who is accusing them (because they are no longer alive) this is groundbreaking.

The technology will also be a voice for those silenced during post decree issues. As the world witnessed last week, an angry ex-husband stormed into a busy beauty salon in California killing 8 people, including his ex-wife who claimed while alive he threatened to kill her. Now, his actions and mental health will be in trial, the threats and abuse she suffered will be considered "hearsay" because she did not have the opportunity to prepare the document and video.

THE GOAL OF THE TECHNOLOGY:

To significantly reduce the number of homicides and missing persons per year by

providing cutting edge technology and vital knowledge that will first give potential

victims a fighting chance, a strong voice, provide valuable non‐reputable evidence that

will aid in any investigations, eventual conviction, overruling “hearsay” laws, in the

worst case scenarios and provide a powerful deterrent against would‐be attackers.

 To significantly reduce the costs incurred by law enforcement, the justice system and health

care services, including insurance claims, each costing taxpayers annually.

If my mama could see me now, wow! In her death, my work and this new technology is a reality. Years ago after she was murdered by my police officer father, my goal was to keep others alive, always striving to find an effective solution. I realize the importance of following your dreams, believing you can change the world!

Diane Ward: A Master Manipulator Vs. Intimate Partner Homicide

On November 8, 2011 a sentencing hearing is scheduled for Bob Ward 63 yrs. old, a wealthy developer convicted of 2nd-Degree murder of his wife Diane, by a Florida jury last month.

Ward faces a 25 years to life sentence and given his age he will likely die in prison. There was a lot of nasty speculation and blaming taking place no doubt by supporters of a man who killed his wife of 25 years in cold blood. A common theme known as "victim bashing" repeated across the country in a number of intimate partner violence cases that result in homicide.

These individuals hold masters degrees in manipulation. Behind closed doors their training begins with emotional abuse by chipping away at the mental well-being of their victim. Once the skill is somewhat perfected they often practice on other members of their immediate family and close friends. The picture they paint is slanted. When they go out as a couple should anything appear or sound out of place the offender seizes the moment to make it appear as if she is crazy. Or they tell stories over a long period of time setting the foundation for "things" changing in the relationship.

A "man's-man" never expresses emotions or feelings that are often attributed to women. Real me don't break in public. So when the clever psychopath opens up (tissue please) to those around him it is taken seriously. Factor in the offenders occupation and work ethic followed by a few Glen Grant scotch's served neat while enjoying a Davidoff Gran Cru cigar and you have the perception of a pussycat not a lady killer. Let's not forget a wonderful attentive and caring father, friend and employer.

He makes remarks like "I don't know whats wrong with her." "You know she is drinking more and more each day." "I am afraid to come for fear of what I will find." "I am being attacked in my own home." "She is crazy and needs help. "All I want is to be happy. I work my ass to provide, ya know?"

In between all of this she the victim is isolated from once close friends, family and her own children." The children caught in the middle and if old enough will comment "Why are you so mean? Why are you making dad crazy?" Instead of identifying to what was already happening before they learned to walk.

Why would anyone throw their life away when they have it all? Why didn't Bob Ward walk away? Because it's never the hand of cards an abuser hold. Fold-em and walk away; translation failure to be a "man."

Unless the perception set-up months and perhaps years before that "she" drove him to the ultimate action that resulted in murder. And he could take comfort in being absolved or forgiven by those closet to him.

News Flash: No one drives anyone to pull a trigger and commit murder. The one who pulls the trigger has planned and plotted over a long period of time. Abusers are thieve's gathering in the thousands in our society, taking away the very lives of their wives and mothers of their own children. Behind closed doors where no one can witness their behavior and actions.

It is difficult to comprehend a parent capable of killing anyone when they are so attentive and loving to everyone else, but the victim. This is key to the thousands of intimate partner homicide cases we hear and read about as the victims voice is forever silenced.

On September 24, 2011 a jury listened and Diane Ward's voice was heard. The case weighed heavily on the 911 call where Bob Ward says 5 times "I just shot my wife."

The defense attorney commented after the verdict was read, throwing-out remarks regarding the Casey Anthony trial, implying the verdict was based on a vendetta of sorts as if to say the Orange County Florida jury was swayed over that case's outcome and his client paid for it.

Intimate Homicide is a crime. Whether or not anyone loved, liked or could have cared less that Diane Ward died. No one has the right to take a persons life.

Taking center stage, is but one man, whom with taxpayer money is allowed to live, Diane Ward will never have that opportunity!

Just because you are not physically hurt in your relationship does not mean you are free and clear. Emotional abuse can and does lead to intimate partner homicide. In many of the recent cases where women have gone missing and have yet to be found, they were never hit or beaten with fists. Instead, words, the same as you see above were their abusers weapons. When that no longer worked they went from words to action, silencing women and the mothers of their own children, forever.

You cannot fix or rescue these individuals. They are toxic and dangerous to any relationship.

Before you consider filing for a divorce or moving out, you better have a plan. He (the abuser) has one if you leave. And the last time I checked designer body bags were not considered a fashion statement.

Playing A Game of Texas Hold'em with Justice: The Daniel Underwood Case

The case of Daniel Underwood, 33 of Sulfur Springs Texas was featured on Wednesday's the Roth Show. On September 4, 2008, during an argument took place with his live-in-girlfriend at the time, and according to witness Maria Harvick, Rebecca Nelson had her hand on the trigger and the sawed off shotgun went off. The bullet struck Daniel through chin up to his face and his head.

Does the girlfriend Rebecca Nelson immediately render aide to Daniel?

Does the girlfriend Rebecca Nelson immediately call 911?

Does the girlfriend Rebecca Nelson assist Daniel as he is chocking on his own blood?

The answer to all three questions is no!

Does the girlfriend Rebecca Nelson cover and smear her own arms, face and clothing with Daniel's blood?

Does the girlfriend Rebecca Nelson tell the other person in the room when she pulled the trigger

to tell police Daniel shot his self?

Does the girlfriend Rebecca Nelson instruct the other person in the room to say to the police that she and Daniel were not arguing or in a struggle and that she was not near the gun when it fired?

The answer to all three questions in blue font is yes!

The evening of the shooting Rebecca Nelson is interviewed by police. Notice that in the video below she asks the police for Daniel Underwood's wallet. First, they are not married. Second, the credit cards in Daniels are his not hers. He was her sole support. She never even owned a credit card. When she is denied the wallet, Rebecca Nelson ask again and they tell her it would be up to his parents to return or work that out. Her tactics for the moment fail.

After she leave the police station, she returns back to the home, while Daniel is being given his last rites and takes everything from a laptop, pool sticks, and other items that can be pawned.

With new information and a witness who has come forward, herself attempting to meet with police and be denied, the Attorney General's office seems the best route to go for the case. Daniel Underwood did not commit suicide, he was in my opinion, murdered!
