The Roth Show with Susan Murphy Milano and Guest Victim's Rights Advocate Andy Kahn

The Roth Show Celebrates Andy Kahan’s 20 Years Advocating for Victims’ Rights

 Listen LIVE: http://therothshow.com/

Join Dr. Laurie Roth and Susan Murphy Milano each Wednesday

BROADCASTING AT A NEW TIME!  8-9 Pacific, 11-12am Eastern

“No one should be able to rob, rape and murder, and then turn around and make a buck off of it; it is blood money plain and simple.” —Andy Kahan, Victim Advocate
Celebrating 20 years in the field of victims’ advocate in Houston, Texas, Andy Kahan has been in the forefront as the “gladiator” fighting for the rights of victims of some of the most heinous crimes.
Murderabilia is a word coined by Houston Crime Victim Advocate Andy Kahan to describe the burgeoning industry in which high-profile murderers/serial killers peddle their personalized items via dealers on the Internet. Once an underground market, murderabilia was popularized by the internet, making it accessible to everyone.
EBay was once the main conduit for buyers and sellers of murderabilia to ply their trade, however, after a 2-year campaign led by Victim Advocate Andy Kahan, eBay no longer allows the sale of murderabilia.
Andy Kahan has had great success working with the State Legislature and helping enact policy changes, including:
  • Making it a capital offense for murder of a child age six or under.
  • Reduction in the number of parolees released in Harris County.
  • Abolishment of mandatory release of convicted felons.
  • Promoting gun safety by making adults criminally responsible for failure to properly store firearms.
  • Mandating the Parole Board meet with either the victims or their family members before a vote takes place.
  • Initiated policy changes with the Texas Department of Public Safety to include deported sex offenders on the their public database.
  • He began a national campaign to stop eBay from selling “murderabilia” —personal mementos from violent crimes—on the Internet. As a result of his efforts, several states, including Texas, passed legislation prohibiting “Notoriety for Profit” by criminals.
And those are only a portion of the policy and law changes spearheaded by Mr. Kahan, which have had an enormous impact on the safety of citizens in the greater Houston area as well as nationwide.
Andy has brought national recognition to the work of the Mayor’s Crime Victims Office with appearances on CNN, CBS’s 48 Hours, Court TV, America’s Most Wanted, The Oprah Winfrey Show, The John Walsh Show, The Nancy Grace Show, the A&E Network, ABC’s 20/20 Prime Time, The Today Show, Good Morning America, Fox News, and 60 Minutes.

Jessica Nicole Wolfe: Lifting the Veil of Silence on Intimate Partner Homicide

Jessica Nicole Wolfe

It's not suppose to happen to someone that you know.  But it does.  Intimate partner violence that leads to homicide takes the lives of approximately eight to ten women each and everyday.  Families affected find their lives suddenly come to an abrupt halt.  Often blaming themselves as to what could have been done differently to prevent such a horror.

Right now as I write this, the family, friends and co-workers of Jessica Nicole Wolfe are experiencing a flood of thoughts feelings and trauma, shaken at their very core over her senseless murder.  One-by one each kicking themselves because they were unable to prevent Jessica's murder from a man with whom she dated, Russell Holt, violent, controlling and abusive.  It should be noted Holt was a probation officer.  Jessica was found murdered in his home around 2:30 am Sunday with a single gunshot to the torso.

For the past six years Jessica was employed as a legal secretary with the Houston County District Attorney's office in Georgia.

Russell Holt has been arrested and charged with her murder.

If you want to see changes.  If you are interested in stopping the bloodshed of intimate partner violence resulting in homicide, than you who are reading about this must do more than gloss over this story with your morning coffee. Sadly, that is exactly what communities across the country  are doing. Nothing!  Yes it's nice to say prayers and words of comfort to surviving family and friends, but without action in the aftermath on our part, it amounts to little more than lip service. What are we doing to prevent the next Jessica from being murdered in silence?

If we don't embrace the victim while still alive and provide real solutions all we do is enable those who kill, simply because we do not consider domestic violence and stalking as a serious crime.

I've been working for over twenty years at successfully keeping victims alive, likely fueled by the  fact that I always felt as if I failed my mother when she was murdered by own father in 1989.  Till my last breath I will continue to fight but, I can't do it alone.  I need the support and help of communities across the country. I need for you to go to the Document The Abuse site and get the information out there into the communities.
I need assistance in spreading the information on April 15, 2012, when the Evidentiary Abuse Affidavit debuts for victims of intimate partner violence as an app in Apple stores across the country.

If we can go viral using the information highway reaching billions, with effective solutions for victims and hold offenders accountable no differently than a drunk driver because it's against the law, we will have successfully lifted the veil of silence.

Document The Abuse for anyone involved in an abusive relationship,
it contains vital information on how the "EAA"can support each case of abuse from the perspective of the first responder's and advocates, to an appearance in court. It explains the legal benefits to the abuse victim, whether they are able to testify or not, how their words are forever documented and hold up in court, much like a Living Will. It is a voice that would have brought justice for Sheila Deviney and other silenced by those who once professed to love them.

Let producers know what cases/what guests
YOU would like to see on the new show.

Tonight on Murphy's Justice case of Sheila Deviney, found burned to death in her Maysville, Oklahoma home in January, 2004. Her death was originally categorized as an accident, but later deemed a homicide which is still unsolved. Through the years the family of Sheila Deviney have tirelessly sought justice, all the while meeting obstacles along the way as her case has grown cold.

Sadly this case is all too common. Victims of intimate partner violence who seek custody of their children and have taken steps to end a relationship before, during or as in Sheila Deviney's case after a divorce are silenced by their abusers.

There is a $50,000 reward being offered to anyone who comes forward with information that will put the killer(s) behind bars. But first, the good people of Garvin County need to start demanding answering because as of now Sheila Deviney's homicide case is not being investigated.

The LA Connection: Natalie Wood and Donna Jou case's

In August of 2008, when John Steven Burgess is arrested and charged with the disappearance of Donna Jou [picture left], he posts $250,000 in cash as bond. This man does not have 2 nickels to his name. No source of documented income. He owns no property. How is able to post that much cash? In addition, a heavy hitter lawyer initially represents him to the tune of approximately $60,000 during some of the court hearings. That is until Burgess signs papers releasing the attorney and represents himself.

The world is now buzzing about what "could have" happened aboard the yacht Splendour the night Natalie Wood's body was found in the water, on November 28, 1981. Last month the LAPD announced they have re-opened the case. There is no disrespect meant when I ask the million dollar question, why? Wasn't the investigation into her death ruled an accident? Does anyone really believe after so many years, her husband actor Robert Wagner, if considered a suspect, after 30 years, would be charged? The answer, highly unlikely.

According to Actor Robert Wagner in his 2008 book, Pieces of My Heart, he had been jealous of Wood's friendship with Actor Christopher Walken and there had been a fight between him, Walken, and Wood, during which Wagner smashed a wine bottle on a table.

Robert Wagner's theory is that Wood tried either to leave the yacht or to secure a dinghy from banging against the hull when she accidentally slipped and fell overboard. When her body was found a mile from the dinghy on Sunday afternoon, she was wearing a down jacket, a nightgown, and socks. A woman on a nearby yacht reported she had heard a woman calling for help at around midnight. The Actresses body was found off Catalina Island approximately a mile away from where the Splendour yacht was anchored. The coroner ruled her death an accident following his investigation. According to the autopsy report, Wood had dozens of bruises on her body, including injuries to her face and arms.

With so many unsolved homicides and missing persons cases in Los Angeles why use important resources that the LAPD claim they do not have for other unsolved open cases?

Donna Jou was a gorgeous 19-year old honor student at San Diego State University wen she vanished after placing an ad in the on-line classified Website Craigslist. Donna was looking to earn extra income tutoring high school kids in math.

Today, in the beautiful city of Los Angeles, a confessed killer and convicted sex offender was released into the public at noon. John Steven Burgess confessed to killing Donna Jou, a 19 year old student who has been missing since June 23, 2007. Although Burgess confessed to her murder and throwing her into the Pacific Ocean, she has never been found. In a plea deal, Burgess was only given a five year sentence for a lesser crime and has only served 2 1/2 years of that sentence. There are many questions surrounding this case that have never been answered. There are other murders and missing persons cases that the LAPD has refused to investigate in my opinion attached to this man whom they released, today.

This disturbing case is not about time served, but a dangerous sexual predator whom, willingly, like a good soldier in his organization, dropped down on a sword for a much greater and dangerous international crime ring, human trafficking, child pornography and prostitution.

It is not likely that Donna Jou's body is in the Pacific Ocean based on information in the case file. But she is out there someplace. Donna Jou needs to be found.

Donna Jou did not have the opportunity to be a rising star in the medical profession. Her life erased by a man whose past is a dangerous predictor of his future to harm others now that he has been released. Since 2007 the family of Donna Jou has done everything in their power to seek answers only to have the doors of the District Attorney's Office and LAPD slammed in their faces.

In both cases, justice appears when you follow the money!

There is still a $15,000 Reward for any information in finding Donna Jou.
If you have any information regarding Donna please contact your local
police department or call Los Angeles Police Department at 213-486-6900
If you have any information on this case please contact CUE Center For Missing Persons at contact Cue Center at (910) 343-1131 24 hour tipline (910) 232-1687.

After reading about the tragedy of Donna's disappearance and the link to a Craig's List ad, Karim Pirani founded SafeList.com

Karim Pirani, Founder of SafeList and Donna's father, Reza Jou will join Dr. Laurie Roth and Susan Murphy Milano to bring unanswered questions to the public about what happened to Donna Jou.

Holding a Higher Standard in Officer Involved Intimate Partner Violence Cases

"This incident definitely tears us apart," Lauderhill Police Capt. Constance Stanley said, describing the effect on the force's 120 sworn officers. "There are a lot of mixed feelings because each of the officers has friends in the department." source The Palm Beach Post......

Officials in Broward County indicate this has never happened until now where a fellow officer empties their Glock into the vehicle of another. Why? Because Officer Brittny Skinner continued to reject him. They briefly dated when she joined the force in 2006, but the single mother broke it off.

Officer Kristopher John Bieger's pattern of conduct escalated during the years from excessive calling, texts and stalking. Did the department look away and not handle this as a serious crime because he was the son of a respected, retired cop? Is it possible that Officer Skinner was ignored by the department? Was she politely told "it is not in your best interest to make waves? How about a place outside of the department veil where Officer Skinner could have received assistance?

Is the Lauderhill Police Department unaware because "no official" record exists.? The statement by Police Captain Stanley "there are a lot of mixed emotions on both sides" incorrect response in my expert opinion. Officer Bieger emptied 10 rounds at Officer Skinner. The only reason she survived unharmed, Skinner was wearing her bullet proof vest. Afterwards, Officer Bieger fled the scene, followed by a stand-off for a couple hours outside a pizzeria until he surrendered to fellow officers.

This crime has nothing to do with whether officer Bieger was in his right mind at the time. The officer did not simply have a bad day and snap!

I hold law enforcement to a higher standard. I always have, despite the fact that I am a police officers daughter galvanized by a tragedy I would not wish on anyone. And not only do I respect law enforcement both on a professional and personal level, I expect those commissioned as sworn officers to know right from wrong when it relates to their personal relationships outside of the department. Extending and implementing policies at the State level on down to the rank and file within police departments.

What is the Lauderhill Police Department and others across the nation doing to prevent these types of intimate partner violence officer related crimes from escalating? Do they have training and continuing education in place? Is it effective?

Education and training has proven an effective solution within agencies of officer involved intimate partner and stalking crimes.

Kyanna Thomas: A Teenager's Life Interrupted by Intimate Partner Homicide

On September 25, 2011, Kyanna Thomas a mere 16 years of age had her throat slashed by her 22-year old boyfriend. She was able to place a call to 911 just before she died. Yesterday, Rashad Salaan was charged with her murder.

According to news accounts the boyfriend meant to slash her enough for sneaking out to a party one evening without his "permission." As if to indicate in this young teen's life ownership of her and he claimed it was an "accident." There is no such thing as an accident when it results in a premeditated crime.

It is likely during their relationship Kyanna was controlled by him. Earlier today, we discussed teen dating violence and bullying with expert Susie Kroll. Today's show should be a wake-up call to every parent across the country. An innocent life was hijacked. If you are a parent or teacher I suggest you download the link below to the show. Who knows you just might save a life!

Susie Kroll on Teen Dating Violence and Bullying — What Can We Do? Teen Dating Violence is the abuse that usually transforms itself into Domestic Violence. Abuse, also called battering, domestic violence, and/or dating violence happens in straight, gay, lesbian, bisexual, transsexual, questioning, and transgendered relationships. It crosses all social, ethnic, racial, and socio-economic lines. An individual’s size, strength, politics, and/or personality DOES NOT determine whether he or she could be an abuser or a victim.
