Five Years and Counting: The Murder of Renee Pagel

It is difficult to imagine after 5 years the only suspect named by police, that this case is no further along then when the body of Renee Pagel stabbed to death (after donating a kidney to a complete stranger) in her home was discovered on August 5, 2006.

Renee, a nurse and grade school teacher was just days away from finalizing her divorce. The evening of August 5, 2006, her 3 children were in the care of her mother-in-law. There was no sign of a struggle, break-in or robbery. The weapon used to stab her to death has never been recovered. The suspect, her estranged husband, has yet to be interviewed by law enforcement. And during today's "Time's Up" radio show on this case, Holly Hughes a defense attorney out of Atlanta, explains he (the only suspect) has the right not to be questioned or cooperate with authorities. Perhaps if authorities actually did their jobs back in 2006, and worked the case, (now there is a concept) the only suspect would be arrested.

Now, it is being shipped to the Cold case unit. In my opinion, that is a slap in the face for this mother, sister, friend and victim of an intimate partner homicide who deserves justice. Not slammed in some cold case metal cabinet to be dusted off each time a reporter or anyone else makes an inquiry on the status of this no justice, no investigation, but plenty of invisible lip service case.

As always someone knows the truth. And perhaps in this case it's an "all in the family secret!"

Regardless, when law enforcement does not do their jobs in cases of intimate partner homicide, they are screaming out to the world that it is acceptable, in my opinion, to murder your wife in cold blood!

News Flash: Stacy Peterson is a Missing Person and Homicide Victim

It would be almost predictable that former Bolingbrook, IL, police Drew Peterson, would have an opinion on the circus like media activity and the tragic outcome surrounding the murder of Caylee Marie Anthony, whose mother Casey was acquitted by a jury, just last week.

No doubt Peterson's defense team watched the trial closely on television along with the rest of the world. But, to give ink as the Chicago Tribune has to Peterson's comment, without providing a photo or any information that Stacy Peterson is still a missing person and that her case is registered with the CUE Center for Missing Persons is a slap in the face for victims and their families across the county.

I said last week on radio interviews and blogs that an individual is innocent until a court of law says otherwise. The Peterson case is no different. And as I have said for months, I would not go to Vegas and bet 10 cents on this case when it finally goes to trial.

In my opinion, much was missed after the body of Kathleen Savio was discovered in a dry bathtub. And the current State's Attorney's office has their work cut out for them when the case finally goes to trial.

But I believe this should also be an opportunity for law enforcement and the media to keep the information out in the public that Stacy Peterson is missing. Every effort should be made until the trial to enlist the public's assistance in finding her. It would have an impact prior to the trial of Kathleen Savio, Peterson's third wife.

To the Tribune staff and editors, I ask that when you get a comment from a man whom has been given celebrity status for in my opinion, practicing on one, and perfecting on the other, include in your story information about a young mother who has been silenced and deserves to be found!

Gloria Allred: Hit or Miss?

I was disturbed by the recent publicity stunt of famed attorney Gloria Allred and her client, porn star Joslyn James[photo left], over a company selling golfs balls called "Tail of the Tiger".

The balls were produced by a company called Creative Classics out of Canada and are sold with the names and pictures of the 12 alleged ladies with whom Tiger Woods sought sexual pleasure outside his marriage.

Now, let me be clear, I have no issue with Ms. Allred, I do however take it as a personal slap in the face when anyone claims that using these specific balls condones violence against women. That is absurd!

During the press conference Gloria Allred used a large graphic to demonstrate that swinging a club and hitting these balls furthers violence. I could see if a company produced ammunition or pocket knives with pictures of women, but golf balls?

Joslyn James then spoke and said she is is angry that a Canadian company has put her portrait on a golf ball it is selling as part of its "Mistress Collection," "I feel that it is wrong for a golf ball to have my picture on it because golfers hit their golf balls with a lot of force," she said.

Then I nearly fell out of my chair as I heard the porn star Joslyn James say:

"As a victim of violence myself, it bothered me to think that someone would be standing with a dangerous club in their hands hitting a ball with my photo on it."

Golf is a game played on a course that involves hitting balls into holes and unless a club is used to threaten a person similar to a baseball bat there is no danger. And yet, instead of simply holding a press conference saying a class action lawsuit would be filed or they were upset with this company for producing golf balls, these two women are using a life and death epidemic and swinging it around as if to imply it is dangerous to women.

In my opinion Pornography, those who work, sell and produce these graphic images is by far more dangerous for women and young girls.

Joslyn James and Gloria Allred should each publicly apologize for this hair brain stunt!

Former White House Staff Dismisses Dangers of Domestic Violence & Attempted Murder

Fred Fielding, Farren's former boss in the White House counsel office, said, "This report is sad and stunning, and completely out of character to anyone who knows or has worked with Mike."]

The remarks by Fred Fielding regarding the character of Former White House Counsel is a common theme among co-workers and buddies of an abuser. Fielding's Public Relations staff have totally disregarded the safety and welfare of Mary Farren [pictured to the left]and her children. Notice that there is not one word mentioned as to the safety of Mary Farren. That shows true ignorance. It clearly indicates the unwillingness to see that Mike Farren committed a felony, a serious criminal act. Just because a person "thinks" they know someone only deepens the wounds for victim's of abuse across the country. Maybe Fred Fielding can't read or thought that beating one's wife "severely" is acceptable because "it's a private matter."

This was also kept fairly quiet until the cowardly abuser appeared before a judge on Thursday. And if Michael Farren was not the "one time power boy on the hill" serving under two administrations this would never have reached sites like poltico.com and the huffington post.

Mary Farren did not have a safety plan prior to serving her husband with divorce papers. In my expert opinion, that was her first mistake. She likely thought in showing the abuser she was taking control of her life and leaving the "explosive environment" he wouldn't dare harm a hair on her head. But, Mike Farren became enraged like all abusers do when they have lost control and within 48 hours Farren tried to kill his wife by beating her with a flashlight and choking her. Mary Farren, was beaten so severely in her home that she was knocked unconscious and lost vision, according to authorities. Mary was luckier than most women in her situation she managed to sound an alarm and flee the house with her two children.

Another insensitive comment :"We are saddened to hear the news," said David Sherzer, spokesman for George W. Bush. "This is a personal matter and we will not be commenting on it."

How about taking a firm stance that domestic violence and attempted murder on ones' wife or girlfriend is a crime? Or he deserves to be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law? I have an idea perhaps they would like to introduce my books and materials and provide them in every county across the country when a victim of violence has a court order of protection and or divorce papers served. That could have prohibited the police being callled and a "buddies wife" being choked and beaten within an inch of their life.

Sadly, all the money on the planet will not keep a victim of violence safe without a comprehensive plan prior to leaving. Alerting an abuser you are leaving while still living in the home is like handing an explosive violent offender a loaded gun!

Not Your Average Camping Trip?

Susan's Powell's family [the young woman who went missing on December 7th] does not believe their son-in-law, Josh Powell, is capable of having anything to do with his wife's sudden disappearance. Her father has gone so far as to ask the public to stop pointing fingers at his son-in-law, saying "I don't see him capable of harming her."

In this case, as in the majority of situations where "suddenly" a wife and mother is gone, the person with whom the victim is in a relationship is always conveniently not around when the person has gone missing. Where else would a mother of 2 young sons go at 12:30 a.m. when she had to be at work the following day? It is also not unusual for friends or relatives to not know if there are marital problems, as is in this case.

If we look at case it begins with a disturbing red flag. Josh Powell on a work night has a light bulb moment and decides to go camping?

In the middle of the night Josh Powell takes the two children, ages 2 and 4, from their comfy warm beds on a camping trip in freezing conditions? What parent in their right mind does this?

Instead of asking him about the camping trip, both the children should be tested for alcohol and or drugs in their systems. It does not take much to give a young child something, enough to be out of it for the night, it could be as simple as Nyquil cold medicine, then wake up to find they [the boys] who, by the way, are barely able to form intelligent sentences, rise and shine to see daddy's happy face.

[Susan Powell, 28, West valley City, Utah]

The facts: Susan Powell has been missing for a week. She did not take her purse or cell phone.
A plea from a family member for her safe return HERE

Police are asking for the public's help. [Perhaps they should consider giving the make and model of Josh Powell's van -just in case he stopped for gas or someone saw the van pull off a road or parked near a river. Or maybe he and the kids ordered from a drive-thru window or had breakfast at McDonalds.]

Sugar Coating Crime

Tommy was in second grade and his older brother Angelo was in the sixth grade and each were looking forward to a thanksgiving holiday feast with their family in their illinois suburban home.

Early Wednesday morning, the day before thanksgiving their father baseball coach and "your average good guy" Thomas Mangiantini killed his wife, Elizabeth, 46, she was shot once in the head. The boys killed first, shoting his son Thomas Jr., 8, once in the head, and his other son, Angelo, 12, who suffered multiple gunshot wounds in the head. Afterwards the man took his own life.

Thanksgiving morning the lawn was still covered in crime scene tape and according to news acccounts a few families nearby changed their plans for the holiday making other arrangments for the day elsewhere.

The front pages of the Chicago papers likely moved the story of "President Obama pardons "Courage" (the turkey) in holiday ritual" changing the headline to the tragedy in bold face type " Dad, mom, 2 children found dead."

The man left a note in which investigators are" hopeful" will bring closure to the case---but I am not certain anyone will really know for sure what happend in this home, other then the obvious. A person whom is distraught in the last hours or moments of their life often leaves handwritten notes behind with the reasons for their actions? I have a news flash-you cannot go by what a person writes who is in this frame of mind. All they are really doing is explaining their personal view point. It is not the truth. So while the police are trying to analyze something a psycho killer wrote, the facts in the case, died with the murdered family members. Anyway you want to sugar coat this, it is still domestic violence homicide. Okay, police have never been called to the home. Neither parents sought legal services for divorce or separtion. I don't want police or the public to dismiss this as "the man had problems", he was "mentally ill", or whatever other lable someone wants to use.

He carried out a plan to execute his family. Was it because he was sexually abusing one or both of the boys and someone was going to let out their secret? Was it because Elizabeth had finally decided the marriage was over and after the holidays she was going to file for divorce?

Prayers to the friends and family left to cope with such a devasting crime.

White House Press Release Won't Stop The Slaughter

At the begining of October President Obama issued a Proclaimation as it relates to this being National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. With great admiration for our President, without a strategic plan of action words in a press release do nothing to stop the slaughter of Americans' and their children suffering from an epidemic where bodily harm and murder are taking the lives of innocent victims due partially to lack of funding and services for its' victims.

Perhaps the President and his administration would consider creating a campaign asking prominent sports figures (that don't have a history of violence themselves) to participate in public service announcements during televised games sending a message that violence is not acceptable behavior, it is a criminal offense and just like drunk driving you will be arrested and prosecuted.

Another suggestion is to create a brief message for school students delivered by President Obama himself to classrooms benefiting those whose voices are silenced because they believe violence is a way of life in their own homes.

The current admistration has the power to change the plight for victims of violence in our nation. It requires a heck of a lot more than issuing a proclaimation that most will never read because they have already lost their lives!

President Obama's proclamation:

THE WHITE HOUSEOffice of the Press SecretaryFor Immediate Release October 1, 2009 NATIONAL DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AWARENESS MONTH, 2009- - - - - - -BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICAA PROCLAMATION

Domestic violence touches the lives of Americans of allages, leaving a devastating impact on women, men, and children of every background and circumstance. A family's home becomesa place of fear, hopelessness, and desperation when a woman isbattered by her partner, a child witnesses the abuse of a lovedone, or a senior is victimized by family members. Since the 1994passage of the landmark Violence Against Women Act, championed by then Senator Joe Biden, our Nation has strengthened its responseto this crime and increased services for victims. Still, far toomany women and families in this country and around the world areaffected by domestic violence. During National Domestic ViolenceAwareness Month, we recommit ourselves to ending violence withinour homes, our communities, and our country.

To effectively respond to domestic violence, we must provideassistance and support that meets the immediate needs of victims.Facing social isolation, victims can find it difficult to protectthemselves and their children. They require safe shelter andhousing, medical care, access to justice, culturally specificservices, and economic opportunity. The Family ViolencePrevention and Services Act supports emergency shelters, crisisintervention programs, and community education about domesticviolence.

In the best of economic times, victims worry about finding ajob and housing, and providing for their children; these problemsonly intensify during periods of financial stress. That is whythe American Recovery and Reinvestment Act provides $325 millionfor the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) and the Victims ofCrime Act (VOCA). This funding will supplement the Federal VAWAand VOCA dollars that flow to communities every year, and enableStates, local governments, tribes, and victim service providersto retain and hire personnel that can serve victims and holdoffenders accountable. These funds will also bring relief tovictims seeking a safe place to live for themselves and their children.

Victims of violence often suffer in silence, not knowingwhere to turn, with little or no guidance and support. Sadly, this tragedy does not just affect adults. Even when childrenare not directly injured by violence, exposure to violence inthe home can contribute to behavioral, social, and emotionalproblems. High school students who report having experiencedphysical violence in a dating relationship are more likely touse drugs and alcohol, are at greater risk of suicide, and maycarry patterns of abuse into future relationships. Our effortsto address domestic violence must include these young victims.

During this month, we rededicate ourselves to breaking thecycle of violence. By providing young people with educationabout healthy relationships, and by changing attitudes thatsupport violence, we recognize that domestic violence can beprevented. We must build the capacity of our Nation's victimservice providers to reach and serve those in need. We urgecommunity leaders to raise awareness and bring attention tothis quiet crisis. And across America, we encourage victims andtheir families to call the National Domestic Violence Hotline at1-800-799-SAFE. Together, we must ensure that, in America, novictim of domestic violence ever struggles alone.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, BARACK OBAMA, President of theUnited States of America, by virtue of the authority vestedin me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States,do hereby proclaim October 2009, as National Domestic ViolenceAwareness Month. I ask all Americans to do their part to end domestic violence in this country by supporting their communities' efforts to assist victims in finding the helpand healing they need.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand thisfirst day of October, in the year of our Lord two thousand nine, and of the Independence of the United States of America thetwo hundred and thirty-fourth.

BARACK OBAMA

Coward With A Badge is Finally Captured

[former police office Derrick Yancey]
Special agents from the U.S. Department of State's Diplomatic Security Service (DSS) located Derrick Yancey in Punta Gorda, Belize. Yancey is wanted in Georgia for double murder of his wife Linda Yancey and a day laborer. Yancey on the run since April was arrested by Belize law enforcement and is awaiting return to the United States.

Yancey was a deputy with the DeKalb County, Georgia Sheriff's Department. In August of 2008, DeKalb County Sheriff's Office charged Yancey with two counts of murder. He was released on $150,000 bond awaiting trial under the condition that he be confined to house arrest. On April 4, 2009, Yancey violated the conditions of his bond and escaped house arrest. In June of 2009 America's Most Wanted featured the fomer officer on their show. Since then, he has been on the run, even eliciting the attention of television's "Americas Most Wanted."

On September 17, 2009, DSS agents in the Regional Security Office in Belmopan, Belize received an investigative lead from the U.S. Marshals Service and the Dekalb County Sheriff's Office on the possible whereabouts of Yancey. Within sixty hours of that tip, DSS agents in Belize were able to confirm Yancey's presence in Punta Gorda and locate his residence. On September 19, 2009, after extensive coordination between officers of the Belize Police Department and personnel in Diplomatic Security's Regional Security Office in Belmopan, both U.S. and Belizean law enforcement awaited Yancey's return to his neighborhood.

Upon arrival at a local bar, at 6:05 PM local time, a DSS agent tapped on Yancey's shoulder and told him "It is time to go." Belize authorities then arrested Yancey.

According to DSS agents, Yancey stated that he was surprised and shocked upon capture. Yancey also revealed he was relieved that he was finally caught and prepared to go home. DSS agents in Washington, DC and Belize will coordinate with The U.S. Marshals Service to arrange for Yancey's return in the near future.

"Diplomatic Security's regional security office in Belmopan maintains an excellent working relationship with local law enforcement personnel, thus enabling Yancey's capture," said, Edgar Moreno, The Bureau of Diplomatic Security's Assistant Director for Domestic Operations. "It's this type of close, worldwide law enforcement liaison capability that gives Diplomatic Security unparalleled ability to locate, pursue, and apprehend fugitives."

Counting Yancey's detention, Diplomatic Security has coordinated the capture of five of America's Most Wanted fugitives in 2009 alone, including previous captures made this year by authorities in Brazil, Nicaragua, Israel, and the Philippines.

"Death in Their Eyes"

Mary is a 51 year- old mother of 3 who will be officially divorced this week after 22 years of marriage.

Her road to life without abuse similar to millions of others in her situation will continue to be difficult. This morning as she was moving into her new home, Mary felt uneasy about her safety. "He's not done with me. I know he will kill me or make it look like an accident. I am terrified." While waiting for the alarm company installer to arrive Mary and I went over safety issues to implement and watch for in her new home.

We walked around the outside of the house with a handyman she hired to secure the windows by placing hinges on the inside removing all the screens replacing then with storm windows. We marked all the doors to be replaced with deadbolts not only on each door but included the screen storm doors, and side door of the garage. Once the alarm company arrived we strategically discussed the placement of the wireless system. In Mary's situation because her husband is angry and violent and has thtretened to take her life the alarm company also wired the garage and extra windows leading into the basement. It cost several hundred dollars extra but it was well worth it.

The alarm company installer suggested that the entire landscape of bushes, or large plants near any of the widows be either cut very low or removed entirely. So that no one could hide. Then Mary and I went to Menards and bought motions lights for the outside of the home and various timers for lights inside the house.

Her husband was scheduled to pick up their son for dinner after I left. I received a text message from Mary, "when he got here he came after me and I had to call the police-they refused to arrest him and I insisted a report be made-Susan he had the look of death in his eyes and he told me I'll never make it to court alive on thursday-he said if I drop divorce he'll forgive me and we can stay married. "

The safety strategies I have implemented for Mary are specific to her abuser and how handy he is at breaking and entering into places always without anyone seeing him. His anger is at a very dangerous level and Mary has a 50/50 chance at staying alive if she remains calm and on guard at all times. And it is a lot of work, but it is possible.

Often a woman is killed because she was not prepared to defend herself. Or the courts refuse to issue an order of protection or police do not feel they have enough to make an arrest. Regardless, a woman fights for the system to do its' job and to basically while continuing to fight the abuser when no one is looking , then fight for her kids and her life. I think about women like Kathleen Savio, the third wife of Drew Peterson. Was there an alarm in the home? If yes why wasn't it activated? Drew Peterson is not only a trained police officer but a skilled locksmith. Did he sneak in while she was sleeping? Did Peterson catch Kathleen off guard at a time of night when it was least expected? Did he sneak into the house and pull a gun on her? Did Kathleen and Drew Peterson struggle? In my opinion like criminal profilers, these are cases that I study in hopes of keeping other women alive.

As a society we have a long way to go before we treat domestic violence in the home as a crime. And then just maybe in high school classrooms we can replace how to correctly use a condom with how to know the signs of an abuser and how to stay safe and what to do if you are in an abusive relationship.

If you have ended a relationship, change those locks, immediately! And do a walk around your home. Remove any ladders, make sure the garage is locked, put away any tools. And yes, even rearrange your living space. What about your windows and sliding glass doors? Get yourself over to the hardware store and find the best cost effective method to bars and locks for these areas.
What about a Do? Don't have a dog? Go ahead and buy or make a Dog Beware sign and put it in your windows.Another great tip is to record the sound of a barking dog. If you don't have a dog, take a recorder and head to the nearest dog shelter and tape the barking sounds. Go ahead and even record your phone voice and message right there on the spot, at the dog shelter. Say something like" Okay Sparky, I'm on the phone, that's enough, be quiet, sorry can't come to the phone please leave a message .Then head home and play it into your phone message system. Then strangers and others you are trying to keep away will think you have dogs and that may deter them. You can also play a recoding each time you answer your telephone with just the sounds of a barking dog. What about a basic home security system? This goes hand in hand with the other security solutions above. To learn more about systems here is an alarm link:http://www.homeimprovementmag.com/Articles/2006/06May_safe_@_home.html If you keep a spare key outside someplace-stop it now! Never leave a key anywhere outside your home.If you are not expecting anyone or anything to arrive at your door, do not open the door. If the bell continues to ring waiting for you to answer the door and you do not know who it is, call 911.And never, ever leave any type of note on your door or mail box for anyone. Either text message them, send an email or do it the old fashioned way and call them.

If you would like to email me please know that everything sent is read only by me and is kept in strict confidence. Again, the email address is contact@movingoutmovingon.com

Tonight On The Levi Page Show with criminal profiler and author Pat Brown, Investigator and Author Vito Colucci, Jr., and myself we will discuss the Kathleen Savio murder.

Sending an S.O.S. Via Twitter to The White House

The story below is about a woman whose life is literally hanging by a thread. This war is not on foreign soil in some third world country. It is on American Soil, in an American home. This is another tragedy waiting to make yet another news item in a mid-size newspaper or topix Internet site with neighbors who once knew the lovely couple and their children, and a by-line that is sure to read "they were a lovely quiet couple," as they are being carried out in body bags on stretchers, one by one.

I believe there is a way to prevent these tragedies, but it will take a higher power of intervention. So as my cell phone was transmitting tweet message's I thought what the heck, maybe there is away to tweet a staff person at the white house. Or perhaps in writing this post, since I don't have direct access someone reading this, could pass on a message to David Axelrod or Valerie Jarrett on my behalf to President Obama. Afterall, he did take the time to sign a note for a child who missed school. And he and others on his staff are from my hometown, Chicago.

I must keep in mind Twitters brief code like transmission capacity.

"Woman develops F.E.A.R. technology" is what I would say in my tweet, hoping to get a reponse that would result in saving lives across the county. If I were ever to speak with someone of such importance I would begin the brief conversation with the murder of my own mother and how 20 years later, I have created something that will keep women and their children from being murdered in their own homes. All I need is a 14 minute meeting by telephone. I can be reached at www.twitter.com/murphymilano

This is the life of a typical victim of domestic violence:

In 2005, police arrested my husband for beating me. The judge did not send him to jail, instead he was ordered to pay $825 in fines, weekly counseling sessions for 90 days and 50 hours of community service.

A year later like magic my husband knew someone and his violent criminal record was wiped clean. I was warned if I ever call the cops again I can forget about seeing my kids alive.

In March of this year my husband kicked me so hard with his steel toed boots he broke my ribs
at the hospital in fear for my kids lives I lied saying I fell. I was beaten again the following week
and gathered the courage knowing his threats to my kids and called the police and he was arrested. I received a Restraining order and the judge had a GPS monitoring device placed on my husbands ankle through the duration of my court order.

As you can guess it only angered him. He hired some thug to teach me a lesson, paying the person to set me and my home on fire. Detectives cannot prove it was him, they have no evidence and no one is willing to come forward with the truth. While I was in the hospital my husband served me with divorce papers. . The divorce is final, but he keeps filing motions about things he "forgot" in the divorce.

The police have also dropped the most recent beating charges because someone lost the photos, my evidence that is required to proceed with my criminal case in court. Guess what else? He has family and friends who are police officers and the GPS device has also been removed.

Now he's calling my kids (I sent them to different relatives in a different state to be safe) saying he's not mad at them, he just wants to ask questions about me. He's called my mom, and he has called me. He says he killed our family pets, he's going to find and kill my kids and then think about killing me. He says he'd rather keep me alive, knowing it would hurt me more to live knowing he killed my kids.

Will I ever feel safe? Will I ever stop dreading each phone call, each court date? How can I keep myself and my kids safe if the cops won't charge him, or do anything? And the local DV shelter refused to let me stay when I got out of the hospital after being burned - I required too much home medical care and they were not staffed to take care of people who can't take care of themselves. I'm moving out of state, but I wonder what will be enough? He knows my name, social security number, kids, family, everything. I'm afraid it will not be over until he decides he's done with me.

The Dangerous Custody Game of Show and Tell

Janet filed for divorce about year ago, from her abusive and controlling husband. He would always attack Janet usually with his fists while the kids were asleep.

In her case because he was in law enforcement, Janet felt strongly that obtaining an order of protection was not an option. She had a false hope and sense of joy and relief once she moved out with her kids. Similar to many women leaving their abusers, feeling as though once the legal tie is cut and they leave with their lives like an empty suitcase, magically everything will be wonderful.

Janet did not consider the children and the potential battle ahead with visitation, safety and custody. Her former husband did not have much interaction with the children, until now, when the game of show and tell is important for the court appointed mental health evaluator and the children’s guardian ad litem to see the loving yet, dangerous father.

Now her husband views himself as an excellent father per the number of support letters sent in to the mental health evaluator by his employer, friends and relatives. Janet scratches her head in disbelief asking why strangers, most of whom she or the children has never met. are sending letters on behalf of her husband’s parenting skills. Letters from people who have only seen a photo of the boys on a desk in a squad room or as it accidently fell out of his wallet at a bar while reaching for cash. “Suddenly this dangerous man whom I am trying to break away from desires and is fighting,” says Janet, for 50/50 custody including being involved in every decision from after school activities to driving the kids to sleepovers. Janet, like so many other women, is discovering this is not a good thing for she or the kids.

Silently, when only she can hear, he leans into her neck and whispers "remember, tell death do us part baby, wise up or the only visits you will receive is the flowers on your tombstone."
Instead of the freedom she anticipated, Janet finds herself still shackled to her abuser permanently. Her abuser is now monitoring and controlling her life through her children with the assistance of professional paid strangers. Alice Doesn't Live There Anymore

The murder of Alice Morrin, wife mother and former fox news assignment editor was one of the most viewed tragedies of the day. She died on Sunday evening as she was texting a friend for help.

You could feel the fear as Alice says to the friend she is texting, where her children are in the home while she is attempting to escape upstairs as her husband has both a knife and a shotgun in his possession, shouting in anger his intentions to kill her. Alice’s mind no doubt races to thoughts of her 2 daughters hiding, hoping they are safe in the house. We do not know what Alice was thinking, but we do know she was pleading for her life.

We will never know what a woman counting moments like the ticking of a second hand on a watch about to be killed is thinking. Or the days, hours and years building up to a life of fear resulting in an unimaginable tragedy.

This is not a story but a human being who fought for her life literally with her last breath. This is a tragedy most would rather not read or gloss over and pretend they understand what it is like to live and wear fear like a garment of clothing that is virtually impossible to remove. Or criticize and perhaps points fingers in blame thinking “Alice was smart enough” or Alice should have had the sense to get out sooner” or if only Alice had told someone she might still be alive.” If only, if only, if only-are words that have no meaning to a victim of domestic violence often forced into a powerless life. Alice Morrin was in the middle of a divorce, she could no longer live her life in fear. Many women are not prepared as they end the relationship, often dropping their guard down because they feel a false sense of empowerment or security in knowing freedom is around the corner.

Seeking a divorce is dangerous unless a self defense strategy to remain alive is included prior to seeking the services of an attorney or filing the paperwork yourself to end the relationship.

Alice Morrin will never fix another meal for her daughters. Alice will never help her daughter's with their homework assignments. Alice will not be available in person to celebrate her daughters birthdays.

Alice has a new address, permanent residency in a cemetary.

If you are in an abusive relationship, you need a plan, not a cemetary plot!

Moving out, Moving on will guide you through the necessary steps of ending a relationship safely.

Private Matter is A Pubic Epidemic

This past week 2 more families were torn apart by bloodshed. One family in Virginia a father and husband fatally shot his wife Bonnie Carter, their 29-year old son William Ronald carter Jr. and another son 22-year old Timothy Carter shot twice but he is expected to survive. Then William Senior set the house on fire before committing suicide. I should also mention the father had called his son home who was attending college. Police say they are investigating a motive as if they need to write something other than intentional homicide in their jacket file before the case is closed. For the son who remains behind, the haunting moments will play in his mind like a needle stuck on a record player, as he walked down the basement steps lured by his father just before he was shot. This nightmare will be more than he can bare as he embarks into a world of his own without family or a place to call home.

On Sunday evening in Connecticut a father and husband James Morrin shot and killed 43-year old Alice Morrin who just happened to be an assignment editor at local FOX affiliate FOX 61 and had recently been promoted to executive assistant to Hartford Courant publisher and FOX 61 general manager. The two children in the home during the shooting were found safe and unharmed.

The children whom grow up in violent households do not know what it means to live their lives free of fear. To dream about their future or the family they will themselves have someday. For these children raised in a war zone it is not part of their reality.

Both Bonnie Carter and Alice Morrin kept the secrets of their war a private family matter. Women, mothers and girlfriends are not trained in life saving strategies nor are the given tools that could very well save their lives. Family violence is not perceived as a crime, until we actually have a crime scene. And then of course police as in each case have to investigate the motives behind killings. Reports and law enforcement speak to neighbors who always make the same statements about “what a quiet couple” or this has never happened in our neighborhood before.”

Now Vice-President Biden has appointed a domestic violence Czar. Perhaps the new Czar will keep an accurate body count. Who knows, we might actually see real dollars going towards those who need it most, the victims!
