The Susan Murphy Milano Show "Time's Up!" Guest Andy Kahn 4/19/2012 at 2pm ET

Listen LIVE at: Here Women Talkwww.herewomentalk.com

“No one should be able to rob, rape and murder, and then turn around and make a buck off of it; it is blood money plain and simple.” —Andy Kahan, Victim Advocate
Murderabilia is a word coined by Houston Crime Victim Advocate Andy Kahan to describe the burgeoning industry in which high-profile murderers/serial killers peddle their personalized items via dealers on the Internet. Once an underground market, murderabilia was popularized by the internet, making it accessible to everyone.
EBay was once the main conduit for buyers and sellers of murderabilia to ply their trade, however, after a 2-year campaign led by Victim Advocate Andy Kahan, eBay no longer allows the sale of murderabilia.
Andy Kahan has had great success working with the State Legislature and helping enact policy changes, including:
  • Making it a capital offense for murder of a child age six or under.
  • Reduction in the number of parolees released in Harris County.
  • Abolishment of mandatory release of convicted felons.
  • Promoting gun safety by making adults criminally responsible for failure to properly store firearms.
  • Mandating the Parole Board meet with either the victims or their family members before a vote takes place.
  • Initiated policy changes with the Texas Department of Public Safety to include deported sex offenders on the their public database.
  • He began a national campaign to stop eBay from selling “murderabilia” —personal mementos from violent crimes—on the Internet. As a result of his efforts, several states, including Texas, passed legislation prohibiting “Notoriety for Profit” by criminals.
And those are only a portion of the policy and law changes spearheaded by Mr. Kahan, which have had an enormous impact on the safety of citizens in the greater Houston area as well as nationwide.
Andy has brought national recognition to the work of the Mayor’s Crime Victims Office with appearances on CNN, CBS’s 48 Hours, Court TV, America’s Most Wanted, The Oprah Winfrey Show, The John Walsh Show, The Nancy Grace Show, the A&E Network, ABC’s 20/20 Prime Time, The Today Show, Good Morning America, Fox News, and 60 Minutes.

Tia Bloomer: Murdered in The Name of Love

It should go without saying that when a person is hit, grabbed by the neck, or punched the first time, you get the hell out and far away as possible.  We wouldn't allow a perfect stranger to do harm and cause injury, we'd immediately press charges.  Yet, young women of high school age are remaining in violent and abusive relationships, all in the name of love.

Love is what got a beautiful Tia Blommer, 19, and the mother of a small child, murdered by her on-again-off-again boyfriend Isaiah Tryon.  The young couple had a history of violence.  They'd met while she was still in high school and had a baby together.  From the start of the relationship it was violent.  In 2009, after an argument he shot at Tia in a hotel parking lot.  The boyfriend pleaded guilty to four counts of assault with a dangerous weapon and one count for possession with a firearm.  The judge convicted this dangerous individual to a 10-year deferred sentence.

Tia continued to see him, because she both loves and fears him, a common thread in violent relationships. The next reported incident, and I believe other incidents happened but police didn't make a full report and or Tia was too fearful of what Tyron would do, he fired a gun at Tia while she held their 2-month-old baby.  He was arrested and charged.  But, here is where prosecutors in Oklahoma failed to do their jobs; they didn't use their "automatic"go to jail card already on the table from the 2009 incident.  Tryon is on probation a deferred 10-year sentence, he should have immediately gone to prison. What were the prosecutors thinking?  They had a chance to revoke his probation and blew it.  Incidents of violence to Tia continued and so does deferred sentences for Tyron.

To a violent offender this type of a slap on the wrist by the criminal justice system is viewed by the criminal of intimate partner violence as a reward.  Translation for the offender, they will walk and not do any prison time.  For the victim, who see's no consequences to the violent person with whom she is involved, it's accepted practice, not taken as a serious crime.

On Friday, at a Oklahoma bus terminal as a dozen or so people were standing around, Tryon began beating and stabbing Tia.  By the time he was pulled off and cuffed, her injures were life-threatening and she died shortly after at the hospital.

Her mistake was calling Tryon telling him she was at the bus terminal, informing him the relationship was over, that she'd had enough.

Tia Bloomer like so many victims across the country do not have the support by their community nor the understanding that violence in a relationship will get you killed.

Society has yet to view intimate partner violence as a crime. Now another young child will grow up without their mother, making periodic visits to a cold cemetery where they will place flowers at Tia's resting place.

Tia Bloomer lost her life in the war known as intimate partner homicide.

The Susan Murphy Milano Show "Time's Up!" Highlights the Amanda Jones Case-Thursday 3/8/2012 at 2pm ET

On August 14, 2005 in Hillsboro, Mo., Amanda Jones 26 and nine months pregnant informed her family after church she was meeting with her unborn baby’s father Bryan Westfall.   Turn the time clock back to nine months earlier when she’d meet Westfall at an event and then became pregnant by him.  Amanda was going to have the baby.  Bryan Westfall shows his hand early by insisting she terminate the pregnancy, “he’d pay for the abortion.”   Here is where “pattern of conduct” in this case is important prior to Amanda vanishing into thin air. It applies to thousands of unsolved and missing person’s homicide cases each year.

A controlling angry individual offers a solution to what they believe is not going to happen.  When a victim doesn’t take to the idea or the resolution by someone with whom they are involved, an individual may give their victim one more chance to change their mind before committing the perfect crime.

Often they the offender arranges an isolated location to meet with their victim, so they can “talk.”  Mind you this isn’t a crime.  Days, weeks and months prior to the location, the offender has carefully selected the area where the two will meet.  Instructions are given to a victim to meet alone because they are going to talk about private matters.

Bryan Westfall was the last known individual to be with Amanda Jones.  This doesn’t in anyway make him responsible for where she may have ultimately ended up that day.  But, then again, an offender never owns up to their ultimate actions.  They are skilled at playing the perfect game of catch me if you can!

Today, on the show Time's Up we will be discussing the case with Monica Caison, founder of the CUE Center for Missing Person's and Amanda's mother Bertha Propst.

Later after the show, follow the blog and we will post the podcast and additional information on the intimate partner missing mother's case.

Tara Johnson and Daughter Allison and the Million Dollar Question

Tara Johnston and her daughter, Allison.
On Tuesday, mother and daughter were found dead in Oklahoma.  And by Wednesday,at a hotel room in Las Vegas, the husband and father was found, he'd committed suicide.

Tara Johnson, 29 and her 16 month -old daughter Allison were murdered.  The couple "appeared loving and happy."   There were no financial issues and no signs of any trouble or abuse in the couple's marriage.  Yet, David Johnson murdered his family.

In cases of intimate partner violence leading to homicide, the silence of not telling their shameful secret to friends and family can be common.  In many relationships, a victim is embarrassed, refraining from disclosing to anyone, even their closet friends they're being abused. A victim can falsely believe they can handle the abuse.  The victim loves the person so much she has a false sense of safety, thinking the situation will never escalate to the point the person will actually kill them, or their own child.

We see this pattern in cases of intimate partner homicide over and over.  There is no making sense of these cases, especially when a father who participates in the upbringing of their own daughter, takes her innocent life.

Everyone who knew the couple will always wonder and then ask my least favorite question in cases of intimate partner homicide; what drove David Johnson to commit murder?

Prayers to the family and friends.

Rebecca Murray Stahl: Teaching Her Students an Important Lesson

To the sixth grade class at Derry Middle school who lost their beloved math teacher Rebecca Murray Stahl, 37 last week, she will forever be remembered by each of you.  She made a significant impact on all of her students.

Today, Rebecca is teaching us another lesson, if we dare to pay attention.  The lesson that love does not mathematically add up and equal violence.  It's an unsolved problem since the beginning of time.  Her death is the answer to an international epidemic of intimate partner violence.

Rebecca's life can't been labeled as an "isolated" or “single incident” or, a “one time only” act of violence. We must not blame Rebecca for being involved in a violent relationship, she didn't cause her death, the person who promised to love honor and cherish, took her away and erased her life as is she were trash on a curb. But we must understand that the world in which these "victims" live, is often no different then captured and tortured prisoners of war. The vanished, the missing, the murdered all were calculated and planned out by an abusive, angry and controlling individual. In this case her violent and angry husband, David

The term “DOMESTIC VIOLENCE” is a continuing pattern of behavior which can include
repeated harassment,
stalking or surveillance of the victim,' threats and intimidation,
bodily harm,
sexual assault,
child abduction
or the constant threat , that can escalate, in some cases to murder .

In most abuse cases, the danger continues despite the victim’s attempts to get help from traditional sources.

In memory of this brave and gifted teacher, let's start teaching dating violence and prevention in middle schools. We teach safe sex and how to beware of sexual predators, but not safety in relationships. Now there's a math problem we can solve!  Let's get busy.

To those involved  in a violent relationship you are unsure as to how to safely end the relationship b low is the podcast from last month's Time's Up show.  I encourage anyone involved in a rocky and potentially lethal relationship to take a few minutes, download and listen when you have time.  Before you say out loud to anyone you relationship is over, you better have a plan.
