Common Denominator Leads to Murder

Ninety-five percent of girlfriends, wives and mothers who “suddenly” vanish, or are found murdered, share a common thread. The last person to have any contact, person of interest, or the individual with whom they were romantically attached, is involved in the crime.

It does not take a rocket scientist to figure out where a trail of blood goes, cold or not, it almost always points to the person in their life. There are a few exceptions to the rule of “who done it,” but those cases are far and few in between. As an example, when Amy Henslee vanished from her home in Hartford, MI, on January 24, 2011, the world of social media decided her husband, James Henslee, must have had something to do with her sudden disappearance. Four days later, the world was wrong, they did not have the facts. Amy Henslee was not a victim of anything but an acquaintance’s obsession resulting in a double homicide by Jr. Lee Beebe, a cousin to the husband, who also murdered his on again off again girlfriend, Tonya Howarth. Both women were discovered in a shallow grave by searcher Jamie Jones of the Missing You Foundation. This case was the exception.

Women like Stacy Peterson, IL; Renee Pernice, KS; Jacque Waller, MS; Hope Meek, OK; Patty Vaughan, TX; Susan Powell, Utah; all still missing, and the prime suspects, their husbands. They had vibrant productive lives, suddenly labeled in a crime file cabinet or drawer, opened when a lead is followed up or a family member is calling into police headquarters for updates and possible answers. The answers are easy, having more than circumstantial evidence, is the issue.

There are few experts in the field of intimate partner perpetrated crimes. The hesitancy to look at a husband or boyfriend as a suspect can depend on the size of the town, available manpower, prosecutor’s office and investigative skills, among other issues.

In my opinion, the case of Sandra Travis is not a complicated case to investigate and make an arrest. Sandra was living in a violent marriage when she disappeared July 31, 2005 from Mayfield, Kentucky, a rural area near the borders of Illinois and Tennessee. Sandra took a lot of punches over the years from her husband, Bobby Travis, probably another man who treated his wife as a piece of property, there to do his bidding, no caring for the way she felt. Someone needs to look under the trailer frome where she disappeared that evening. Maybe the Illinois State police can over ride the prosecutor who does not have much experience in obtaining a search warrant.

Another case is Renee Pagel, killed on August 5, 2006. She was a grade school teacher and a registered nurse. According to friends, Renee feared for her safety from her estranged husband. As many women say when they are married to an abusive spouse, "if something happens to me, make sure people know it was not an acciden," and yet, what I label as “Mayberry” police, have yet to arrest Michael Pagel. This is shear ignorance on the part of the investigators. Her life was silenced as she was ending the marriage; her husband’s response, in my expert opinion, was ending her life.

Sometimes it can take years for a family, even without locating the remains of their loved one to secure answers, when an arrest is finally made in a case. When Venus Stewart, (MI) vanished from her parents in April of 2010, there was only person who was responsible for her abrupt vanishing, her husband, Douglas. Earlier this year without a body, he was prosecuted and sentenced to life in prison. The family continues to search for Venus.

My hope is for everyone waiting for that unexpected phone call of a clue, tip or an arrest to remain strong and hopeful that answers in their loved ones cases will be forthcoming.

While these women's lives did not hold meaning to the person they were with, they did have great importance to many others whose faces you do not see or voices you do not hear because they are continuously searching and doing what they can to bring their loved ones home.

The month of October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Intimate partner violence occurs 365 days a year, 7 days a week. Perhaps doing something for those whom you know are in a rocky or violent relationship is a start to how you can help others.

Providing information on what you need to do if you or someone you know is in a potentially violent relationship is done with the hope of saving lives. My work in the area of intimate partner violence prevention  is a direct result of not being able to save my own mother back in 1989, killed by her police detective husband prior to committing suicide.

If you are in a relationship that has a history of violence, simply mustering up the courage to confront the person and say it is over, without the proper tools, can cost you, your life!

One of the major reasons women stay in abusive relationships is fear. They are afraid of what will happen to them and their children if they leave. Sadly, their fears are often justified; statistics show that a woman is at the greatest risk for injury when she announces her plans or leaves an abusive relationship. The book "Time's Up A Guide on How To Survive and Abusive and Stalking Relationship" is the prescription, if you will, that every person must obtain before they announce they are leaving. Below is an example from Chapter 4, one of many unique tools provided in the book. It is available on Amazon.com, or you can purchase via e-book or on a cd. If you have questions, the email address is: timesupforjustice@gmail.com

Before you decide that you have had enough and are ending the relationship, create for yourself the "Evidentiary Abuse Affidavit" and video (shown below).

If you do nothing else, please take one important step that if something does happen to you, if you do vanish like Stacy Peterson, Vensus Stewart, Rachel Anderson, Susan Powell, Lisa Stebic, or arefoundmurdered like Monica Beresford-Redmond, Franki Jacobson, Renee Pagel, Summer Inman,Kelly Rothwell and others where the person responsible has gotten away with murder that your voice and record of the abuse will be captured and recorded. Do it for you friends, family and loved ones. Do it for your children. Do it for you!

If you have questions, the email address is: timesupforjustice@gmail.com

This book doesn't merely discuss when you should leave or why you should leave, it tells you HOW you should leave. The book has step-by-step instructions how to covertly make a plan, set-up a safe escape, deal with financial issues, and the paperwork. Susan even takes you line-by-line through the process, the forms, the legal issues...she takes you by the hand, and, believe me, when you are being terrorized and you are an basket case, you don't need vague ideas, you need specific instructions. TIME'S UP can save your life and your sanity. If you need to get out, get this book before you make a mistake that could be fatal. It is money well spent.

Kathleen Connolly: A Dedicated Employee at QVC and Intimate Partner Homicide

In the morning an Orange County grand jury in New York will decide the case of an individual who decided to end a relationship by committing murder.

This was not a random act towards a stranger, but a planned killing. On or about July 7, 2011, Kathleen Connolly, 27. of Lancaster, Pa, and mother of two toddlers, vanished into thin air. Two weeks later in Pennsylvania, a missing persons police report was completed. Her body was discovered last week, buried in a backyard in Orange County, NY and now prosecutors must determine in which state Kathleen was killed. In New York, a person convicted of murder will do time and then have the ability to be paroled, but in Pennsylvania, if convicted, it is a life sentence without the possibility of parole.

Kathleen was also an employee with QVC. Although she worked there for only a few months, the company issued a heartfelt statement when they learned she had died.

Kathleen Connolly was a victim of intimate partner homicide, employed but one of our nation’s largest retailers. She is not the only victim employed by QVC currently living in fear from a husband or boyfriend. Within the homes that QVC reaches after a customer makes a purchase, the packages shipped from company warehouses , set on a door step waiting to be carried and brought into a home, are also victims living their lives similar to Kathleen Connolly, in fear.

In my opinion, QVC has an opportunity to change how the world deals with the epidemic of intimate partner violence that leads to homicide. Kathleen’s children will never know the love of their mother. They will never likely remember anything about her because of their ages. It would be wonderful if in her abrupt silence, her life could have more importance than just another name added to an already crowded cemetery.

Perhaps, in honor of this woman and mother, QVC, during National Domestic Violence Awareness Month in October could offer to its’ customers, in memory of Kathleen Connolly, the procedure of the Evidentiary Abuse Affidavit and Video along with other important information provided in the book “Times Up” A Guide on How to Leave and Survive Abusive and Stalking Relationships.

If I am asked by QVC, in memory of my own mother, murdered, gunned down by a man sworn to serve and protect, to appear on a broadcast and offer the prescription in a book that is saving lives, I would be honored. QVC reaches millions via their 24-hour shopping network and what a wonderful way to offer victims in these situations a fighting chance at survival!

Bottom line is with today's technology and careful planning by offenders that goes into murdering victims of intimate partner violence and stalking, you need an effective plan that deals with all aspects of the violence.

When you go to the doctor because you are sick, they usually write the patient a prescription to get better. The same applies to victims of intimate partner abuse, stalking and potential homicide. The prescription, now available on the market is called , Time's Up!

If you are in a relationship that has a history of violence, simply mustering up the courage to confront the person and say it is over, without the proper tools, can cost you, your life!

Ethics Play a Major Factor in the Murder of Sheena Morris

Tonight, August 2, 2011, on the Crime Wire Investigates radio show, as part of our on going flame to justice, we discussed the death and lack of investigation in the unsolved death of Sheena Morris.

On January 1, 2009, the 22-year old was found hanging from a shower in a hotel room located in Anna Marie Island, Florida. Sheena was ending the relationship with her on again off again boyfriend, telling her mother it was coming to an end and things were going to change in the New Year.

It is important to note that a victim of intimate partner violence, never takes their own life as we would learn during the show; often they figure out the best way to move forward minus the violence and live their lives, not take their life! This was not a suicide as initially ruled.  Basically, no investigation was done by Bradenton detectives and the crime scene was mishandled. The medical examiner's office relied on those who responded to the scene, and with limited information and incorrect police reports, each a contributing factor in the initial ruling for this case as a suicide.

It would be Kelly Osborn, Sheena's mother, that would gather evidence and  information, along with hiring outside forensic pathologists Dr. Michael Baden and Dr. Michael Berkland, that would allow the Florida medical examiner to change the manner of death in March of 2011 to "undetermined." That should have been enough to re-open the case, but it was not. Public comments in media interviews labeling Kelly Osborn as a mere "grieving mother" are inexcusable.

In addition, 10 months after Sheena's death, the detective contacted the person of interest and informed him that "he is going to contact his alibi" for the evening in question. This action, in and of itself, is a huge ethics issue. It goes to credibility and can hurt future cases within the department, the county, and for the FDLE.

There were other issues and red flags of importance discussed about this case. The FDLE must take the lead and step in to investigate. Until they do, we (Crime Wire) will continue to take appropriate measures in the murder investigation and ultimate justice for Sheena Morris. Below is the link to the Crime Wire show.

Shannon Paolini is Fighting For Her Life

As I write this a young mother is fighting for her life. Shannon Paolini, 27 was shot 5 times as she ran out of her home. The offender, her boyfriend and father of their 2-year old child continued firing at her and then ran back into the home. A stand-off with the Fountain, Colorado, police and swat team lasted over six hours. The outcome, devastating.

Inside police found the two year old son dead from his father's own hand --a gunshot wound to the head. The offender committed suicide. According to reports and the news there was so much poured gasoline in the house it took an additional 3 plus hours before investigators would re-enter the home. Police also found a note of sorts detailing his disturbing thoughts about his relationship that lead up to the shootings. He planned every detail down to the gas container he purchased at Wal-Mart.

Shannon is employed with the El Paso County Sheriff's Office. The Sheriff released a heart felt statement I don't often see in cases of intimate partner violence and homicide that includes starting a fund to assist she and her family.

The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office would like to send out some information regarding our friend and co-worker, Shannon Paolini. She has been employed with us since August 2007, and is a Financial Services Specialist. She is in critical condition at a local hospital and is fighting for her life. She is surrounded by friends and family.

Shannon is an amazing lady. She is never seen at work without a smile. Shannon’s greatest joy is her son and her family. She enjoys physical fitness, dancing, and spending time with family and friends. The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office is providing any and all assistance we can to Shannon and her family. In the near future we will be working to start a fund in Shannon’s name to assist her family with the financial struggles they will be facing in the future. We appreciate the kind words, thoughts and prayers from our community. Sheriff Terry Maketa said, “Our thoughts and prayers are with Shannon, and all friends and family affected by these senseless and tragic events. We also recognize the loss felt by the family of the suspect and the loss of an innocent child.”

Once you are threatened, hit, stalked, questioned in a controlling way, a second chance to save your life, is no longer an option.

“If you are reading this and find yourself in a similar situation, know that there are measures you must take before announcing the end of your relationship. These safety precautions can be found in the book, "Time's Up: A Guide on How to Leave an Abusive and Stalking Relationship" by Susan Murphy Milano. Don't take things into your own hands without expert guidance.” (Mothers Are Vanishing)

I cannot stress enough, if you are in a relationship that has a history of violence, simply mustering up the courage to confront the person and say it is over, without the proper tools, can cost you, your life!

Donna Jou Case: Follow The Money

"On May 06, 2009: John Steven Burgess pleated guilty to Involuntary Manslaughter
and Concealment of Accidental Death and dumping of Donna Jou, 19,
college student into the Pacific Ocean (due to lack of evidence to prove
or disprove his statement, the court accepted his fabricated story. )"

On April 15, 2011, after serving 2 years of a 5 year sentence, John Steven Burgess, will be released from North Kern State Prison, in California. This disturbing case is not about time served, but a dangerous sexual predator who, in my opinion, willingly, like a good foot soldier in his organization, falls on the sword for a much larger and dangerous international crime ring, human trafficking, child pornography and prostitution.

In August of 2008, when Burgess is arrested and charged with the disappearance of Donna Jou, he posts $250,000 in cash as bond. This man does not have 2 nickels to his name. No source of documented income. He owns no property. How is able to post that much cash? In addition, a heavy hitter lawyer initially represents him to the tune of approximately $60,000 during some of the court hearings. That is until Burgess signs papers releasing the attorney and represents himself.

While incarcerated, does Burgess enjoy a more comfortable lifestyle? Who are the individuals filling his prison bank account so he can purchase whatever he needs? Why is he not being released on a GPS monitoring device? Why is he not being discharged and documented into a halfway facility? Why is he being allowed to go out on his own minus any accountability? Who is his parole agent?

Burgess did not register when he was mandated by the courts as a sex offender before Donna Jou vanished, so why is he going undetected back into the community? That is outrageous.

John Steven Burgess is coming to a community near you.

Follow the money and you have your answers. Tragically, this case from the beginning had less to do with the disappearance of a Donna Jou and more to do with money, corruption and protecting informants. Follow Burgess and his connections and you may just uncover one of the largest criminal organizations that make the mafia look like girl scouts.

This entire week will be devoted to the release of John Steven Burgess. Also known by the name of Logan Anderson. Intimate number F95524.

On Tuesday, Crime Wire at 9:00 PM Eastern time will devote an entire hour to the release of John Steven Burgess and missing College Student Donna Jou.
On Wednesday, at 7:00 PM Eastern time www.therothshow.com will continue the coverage on the case.

On Thursday, on The Susan Murphy Milano show "Time's Up" the system, the money and what must be done in this case, prior to the release of John Steven Burgess.

Through out the week on the blog coverage will continue. Hopefully, everyone who reads this will post on their websites, twitter, social networking pages and write to the California Parole Board, Senator Diane Feinstein and Senator Barbara Boxer to express outrage over the release of John Steven Burgess.

There is still a $15,000 Reward for any information in finding Donna Jou.
If you have any information regarding Donna please contact your local
police department or call Los Angeles Police Department at 213-486-6900
