The Queens of True Crime discuss "Women Who Kill" on The Susan Murphy Milano Show 2:00 PM Eastern Time

Thursday, December 15, 2pm ET

Listen LIVE at: Here Women Talk

Good friends, each of them living in Texas, and their penchant for well researched books in a genre that often gets a less than stellar view, Casey and Fanning often show up in the same circle of events. To have them together is a double hit of talent. Along with all of their true crime books, each has developed a series of crime based novels with a strong female lead character, Fanning’s Det. Lucinda Pierce and Casey’s Sarah Armstrong, both which leave readers wanting more. Listen Live by going to www.herewomentalk.com

Diane Fanning

Before writing her first true crime book, Fanning wrote for magazines, television, radio and ad agencies in Virginia, earning many awards, before she moved to Texas where her career in true crime blossomed, along with her work with several non profit organizations. She has served on the executive committees of the Writers’ League of Texas and the Heart of Texas chapter of Sisters in Crime and is also a member of Mystery Writers of America.

Several of Fanning’s books deal with the issue of intimate partner homicide and violence, including the Edgar award nominated, “Written in Blood,” about the death of Kathleen Peterson and the subsequent conviction of her husband, Michael Peterson. Another book, “Gone Forever,” written about the death of a mother of three, leaving her marriage and winding up a murder victim, was praised highly by many who work with domestic violence victims and the aftermath of trauma in the home, recommending the book to victims of violence with whom they come in contact with.

While completing the story of serial killer, Tommy Lynn Sells, Diane Fanning saw the case of Julie Rea Harper on 20/20, a woman convicted of murdering her own son. Fanning’s correspondence with Sells revealed that he, indeed, was the killer and Julie Rea Harper’s conviction was overturned by appeal. For her involvement in this case, Diane Fanning was recently honored with an award by the Innocence Project. (http://www.uis.edu/innocenceproject/)

Contracted to write the only book to date on the life and death of Caylee Anthony, Mommy’s Little Girl, Fanning gained national attention for her dynamic research and the ability to organize it in such a way as to be the voice for a child lost to murder.

Kathryn Casey

“I was looking for a good subject for my first book in 1992 when I interviewed Linda Bergstrom for a magazine article. I knew immediately that I had found the right case. The result: EVIL BESIDE HER (formerly titled THE RAPIST’S WIFE). Following that, along came Susan White, Kent McGowen and A WARRANT TO KILL. Then I was off to Austin for the next three books, the first SHE WANTED IT ALL, on the Celeste Beard case, followed by DIE, MY LOVE, on the Piper Rountree case, set in Austin/Houston/ and Richmond, Virginia. My most recent true crime book, A DESCENT INTO HELL, on the Colton Pitonyak case, is a truly tragic Austin case, deeply troubling. The research took me into the world of college kids, drugs, sex, and guns. In DESCENT, three college-age kids with the whole world ahead of them slide into dangerous territory, and two end up committing a terrible, terrible crime.

Finally, after two decades covering crime, I’ve relied on my experiences and expanded into fiction. The result: SINGULARITY, my first novel, published by St. Martin’s Minotaur. The first in a series, SINGULARITY introduces Lieutenant Sarah Armstrong, the Texas Rangers’ lone profiler, as she hunts a seriously strange killer. The case quickly takes over Armstrong’s life and nearly destroys her. The second in the series, BLOOD LINES, is now out, and THE KILLING STORM is scheduled for fall 2010. “

"Shattered"

In January of 1999, Belinda Temple, 8 months pregnant, was found in the bedroom of her home, in her closet, dead of a gunshot wound. The case would remain unsolved until David Temple was arrested for her murder in 2004. On November 15, 2007 he was found guilty by a Texas jury for murdering his wife.

It comes as no surprise that Temple was having an affair with another woman during his marriage to Belinda; he married his mistress a few years after Belinda’s death and began a new life.

Many of the men whom are suspected in the murder of their wives often live several lives of lies. The identical playbook of lies and deception was used by Scott Peterson, Drew Peterson, and Bruce Beresford-Redman. To the world they present themselves as loving, concerned fathers and husbands, pillars in the community who would never swat a fly. Each of these men lived and breathed lies outside the home, each had a mistress. Although I don’t count Drew Peterson’s wife Stacy as a mistress, she was just a kid, a teenager lured by a serial predator dangling towards her a world beyond her reality, a child all of 15 years old when he met her. Two of these men, both with the last name of Peterson, never once participated in the search of their wives.

If I had the opportunity to meet and speak with Christina Raines (Drew Peterson); Heather Scott (David Temple); Joy Pierce (Bruce Beresford-Redman); I would ask them, "why they continued or began a relationship with these murderers knowing they completely erased the women with whom they were married to at the time?" They are dangerous, clever individuals capable of killing, even them, if they could no longer be controlled or wanted out of the relationship. I would ask, "was their life so meaningless that they were willing to risk it all in the name of love?"

Kathryn Casey’s new book, available for pre-order on Amazon.com and set for release on June 29, 2010, is titled “Shattered,” based on the David Temple case. It will no doubt provide a chilling account of a woman by the name of Belinda Temple, who deserved more than being erased from earth because her husband met and fell in love with another woman. The book is not just another true crime story. It is not a "story," in my opinion, because stories are not real. Kathryn Casey’s book is written about a woman who was a domestic violence victim, a woman who married a man with strong ties in the community. Family and friends refused to believe their “David” capable of such a gruesome act of violence.

"Shattered" is not just another crime book. It captures the true essence of a woman’s life torn apart by a man’s savage and inhumane rage. David Temple was a predator, planning and calculating, like others we watch or read about in the news, until the final hour of the kill. Kathryn Casey’s book is a must for cold case detectives, law enforcement, medical examiners, lawyers, social workers and victims of violence living in fear.

E! True Hollywood: "Husband's Who Kill"

Tonight at 9:00 PM EST E! True Hollywood Story Investigates.

The one-hour episode, "Husbands Who Kill," explores cases of seemingly loving husbands driven to murder their wives. One was in fact a loving husband. Problem was, his wife loved another man.

Tonight's program on E! investigates the cases of four women slain by their husbands. The three men who only appeared to be loving husbands had been living lies. Two had misled family and friends into believing they were pursuing advanced degrees, one a medical degree, the other an MBA from Harvard. The truth was that neither had graduated from college and both were running out of money and lies. At least one of the wives discovered the truth, but did not live to tell. The other man gave his "ailing" wife Gatorade spiked with antifreeze and went on to become a popular radio host. WCI's Author / Broadcaster Michele McPhee wrote about that case and others in "Why Are Smart Women Carried Away by Fakes?"

The third husband living a lie was David Temple, a Texas football star turned high-school coach. Temple ended up being prosecuted by WCI's Kelly Siegler for firing a shotgun20into the back of his wife's head. Belinda Temple was eight months pregnant with their second child. (Siegler, right, grills Temple during the trial)

In fact, two of tonight's cases involve husbands convicted of taking the lives of their wives and unborn children. Lately, any story about a pregnant wife murdered by her husband immediately draws a Laci Peterson comparison. But the Temple case pre-dated Laci's by several years. The tale is complete with an Amber Frey character—with one key distinction: Scott Peterson's lover did not know she was dating a married man until he became a suspect in his wife's disappearance. When Frey realized that Scott had been motivated to do away with his wife so he could be with Amb er, she helped authorities put him away. David Temple's love interest,

Heather Scott—a teacher at the school where David coached—knew her lover was someone's husband=2 0and father. After David murdered his wife, Heather married him and testified on his behalf (above).

Once the cold-case made it to trial, the courtroom heated up as Kelly Siegler clashed with renowned criminal defense attorney Dick DeGuerin, proving the media's prediction of "fireworks" in the courtroom between the legal giants to be an understatement. DeGuerin (pictured right of Temple, upon conviction) maintains his client—who was filmed on Home Depot surveillance camer as around the time of the murder—was not guilty. DeGuerin accused Siegler of being so effective at her job that she'd done what defense attorney Richard "Racehorse" Haynes once said was inevitable: "She's convicted an innocent man ."

The victim's family saw things differently. When Temple was finally convicted nearly nine years after the murder, Belinda's brother said he'd suspected David's involvement within ten minutes of her death. Following sentencing, her father said, "People have told us, 'Get over it.' You can't get over your baby—especially in these types of circumstances. . . . Put a shotgun to my baby's head and blow her brains out . It just wasn't right. And I'm so glad justice has prevailed."
Kelly Siegler's case is just one among four stories of husbands who kill. For a full hour on that story, look for the show WCI's Jenna Jackson is producing for http://www.cbsnews.com/sections/48hours. Or wait for the book that Kathryn Casey is working on: Shattered: The David Temple Story.
But don't miss Susan and Kelly tonight, in what the producer for "Husbands Who Kill" promises to be a provocative hour of television. Click here to watch the trailer for the next THS Investigates: An in-depth examination of criminal behavior.
