Sheriff's "Regret" is a Disturbing Trend

Today the murder trial in Florida continued for Juan Mendez who is accused of killing his estranged wife Whitney Mendez and mother in-law Lorena Stone in 2006.

Just when I thought the trial could go either way, that perhaps the prosecutor had a chance to win the case, it all changed when sheriff's Sgt. Walter Ryan was on the stand. During his testimony he told the jurors he "regretted not doing more work as the lead detective investigating the homicides of Whitney Mendez and her mother, Lorena Stone."

Assistant State Attorney Cynthia Ross asked Sheriff Ryan if he investigated the case as fully as he should have. "Looking back now," Ryan said, "regrettably, no." Ryan testified he didn't collect house phone records because he was told by the phone company that only billable calls - collect or long distance - are stored. But Ryan also said he didn't collect call records of cell phones found in the house. "I never got the cell phone records," Ryan testified. "I wish I had."

It is painfully obvious that many are to blame for a sloppy homicide investigation. From recovery of cell phone records, witness interviews, court document files, text message records to domestic violence calls to the home. The police are rarely, if at all properly trained in domestic violence homicide investigations and that was made very clear today, during the trial. Also, the prosecutor basically allowed the case to go cold for nearly a year before an investigation could be re-ignited.

For a successful prosecution in any domestic violence homicide case, expertise and knowledge are crucial for those standing in the aftermath of a bloody battlefield.

Perhaps when the trial concludes the prosecutor will invite me down for an intense day of training so that in the future their jobs will be easier and justice can actually be served!

I am not in any way trying to be sarcastic or disrespectful to anyone fighting for justice. With 20 years of experience in all types of homicide as it relates to family violence and stalking why not turn to someone that can make or break a case. Granted, I would not know where to begin when it comes to sex crime cases involving children, but, I do have the ability to teach others succesfully, by enhancing their skills in this area.

Crime Continues to Happen

Due to Susan's internet being down since a storm over the weekend, she has not been able to post, and yet crimes against women continue to happen.....


A headline gives her a number, "L.A. Murder number 215" but Xiomara Lopez was a 36 year old mother of three children, 11, 7, and 3. As she was holding her 3 year old daughter, and in the presence of the other two children, her husband and she were arguing.

Wife Killed After Argument with Her Husband

Los Angeles: A 36-year-old Los Angeles woman was gunned down during an argument with her husband and one of her children was injured.

On Friday, August 28, 2009, at around 11:50 p.m., Xiomara Lopez was involved in an argument with her husband 36-year-old Carlos Lopez in the 2900 block of Kenwood Avenue. During the argument, Carlos Lopez armed himself with a handgun and fired multiple rounds at Xiomara who was wounded. The victim’s three children were present during this shooting and the 11-year-old boy sustained a gunshot wound.

After the shooting, the suspect drove away in a white, Toyota, Corolla. A short time later both the car and the handgun were recovered by detectives.

Los Angeles City Fire personnel responded the scene and Xiomara was pronounced dead at scene. The boy was transported to a local hospital and listed in stable condition. The other two children were not injured during the shooting.

Carlos Anibal Lopez is described as a male Hispanic, 36-year-old (DOB 07-16-73), 5 feet 4 inches tall and 124 pounds.

Father Murders 5 Children & Wife

LOS ANGELES, CA —Just a few hours ago, a Ervin Lupoe upset over job problems fatally shot his wife, five young children and himself at their harbor-area home Tuesday. Police said the victims included two sets of twins.

Shortly before the killings, the Mr. Lupoe faxed a letter to a TV station claiming that he and his wife had been fired from jobs as medical technicians and she suggested they kill themselves and their children, too.


"Why leave the children to a stranger?" the man wrote, according to KABC-TV.
KABC reported that the man claimed in the fax that a medical center administrator rebuffed them when they showed up to work, told them to file a union grievance and said, "You should have blown your brains out."
The man wrote that they filed a grievance but nothing was done and two days later they were fired, KABC said.

"They did nothing to the manager who started such and did not attempt to assist us in the matter, knowing we have no job and five children under 8 years old with no place to go. So here we are," the note said.

At the bottom of the note, the man wrote, "Oh lord, my God, is there no hope for a widow's son?"

The note said the couple worked at Kaiser Permanente West Los Angeles Medical Center, but police said they were trying to confirm that. A message seeking comment from the medical center was not immediately returned.

The family was not immediately identified. Police said the child victims were an 8-year-old girl, twin 5-year-old girls and twin 2-year-old boys. It was the third mass slaying of a family in Southern California since fall.

"Today our worst fear was realized," said Deputy Chief Kenneth Garner. "It's just not a solution. There's just so many ways you find alternatives to doing something so horrific and drastic as this."

Police described the fax but did not release the detail reported by the KABC.
"He was going through some critical situation at the job, that's what he described in that two-page letter, ongoing problems at the job, and that's what prompted him to take his own life and his family, from what was said in the fax letter," Garner said.
The TV station called police after receiving the fax, and a police communications center also received a call from a man who stated, "'I just returned home and my whole family's been shot,"' Garner said.

"There is a disconnect but we believe our suspect is the one who called," Garner said.
Garner said a note was found in the home, but it was not clear if it was what had been faxed to the TV station.
Officers rushed to the two-story home in Wilmington, near the Port of Los Angeles, shortly before 8:30 a.m., apparently within minutes of the killings. Garner said the officers could still smell the gunshot residue.

The bodies of the girls and the father were in one bedroom. The mother and boys were in another bedroom.

Although the fax asserted that the woman was involved, police Lt. John Romero said, "It is apparent that the suspect in the murder is the male adult."

The two-story home, much larger than its one-story neighbors, sits in front of a railroad track in Wilmington, a 10-square-mile community about 18 miles south of downtown. A children's playset stood in the backyard and a pickup truck and sport utility vehicle were parked in the concrete front yard.

On Dec. 24, Bruce Pardo, 45, dressed up as Santa Claus and invaded a Christmas Eve party at his ex-wife's parents' home in suburban Covina, opened fire with a gun and set the house ablaze with racing fuel. Ex-wife Sylvia Pardo and eight relatives were fatally shot or burned. Pardo later killed himself.

In October, a 45-year-old unemployed financial manager despairing over extreme money problems shot and killed his wife, three children, mother-in-law and himself in their home in the Porter Ranch area of the San Fernando Valley.
Karthik Rajaram wrote in a suicide letter he felt the honorable choice was to kill himself and his family instead of just himself, police said.

The brutally Erased Lives of Taylor, Age 13 and Skyla, Age 11

On Sunday, June 9th, 2008, Taylor Paschal Placker and Skyla Whiaker were in their play clothes walking down a rural road in Oklahoma. As best friends, their day likely began as all the others in summers past. Swimming in a creek, playing with dolls or riding their bikes together.

For each child's family their daily routines abruptly halted the moment the granfather discovered the girls bodies and news was received of their slayings. Taylor and Skyla were found gunned down with multiple gunshots in an area well traveled by town residents.

Taylor and Skyla will never graduate from grammer, high school or college. They will never experience of joy of motherhood. The girls will be a tragic memory for many years, in the community. On a road, at a specific time, people from the this small town will remember as they drive by and point to the area where they were senselessly slain.

When school begins in the fall, two seats will be painfully vacant.

And for Taylor and Skyla's families, the empty chair at the dinner table will be a constant reminder of times shared together, as a family, before June 9, 2008.

A $14,000 reward is being offered for information and the arrest of those responsible.

The Bells of Justice Are Calling Barbara Winn

On Thursday, Barbara Winn's family and friends filled every seat in the St. Paul, MN courtroom.

No one complained about the close, tight, seating that morning.

They had prayed and thought of this special day for twenty-seven long years. The family quietly sat as the accused Aaron Foster, indicted by a grand jury back in November, appeared in court before the judge.

On Monday, court will begin again, as family and friends listen to arguments as to whether or not the murder case of Barbara Winn will be heard or dimissed.

Family Murders: A Dangerous Epidemic

In a small town in Memphis, yet another slaughter of an entire family. As the American public read these tragedies with our morning coffee, do we ever stop and think, perhaps these killings and so many others exactly like them in recent months, are basically out of control ? Do we really care to know if any of these could have been prevented?

Is this what the American Family has become ? Are we left with being deathly afraid of our own flesh and blood?

We can watch these killings all day long like a drug as we become increasingly inundated with one tragic event after another । Or we can take our heads out from under the rock where we all have gone to hide. I have a suggestion, let us start to pay attention to our friends, relatives, co-workers and those we once knew as our neighbors by providing some old fashioned human interactive contact.

Six people, including two children, were found dead in a home Monday night in Memphis' Binghampton -----
Memphis Fire Department spokeswoman Melanie Young said firefighters responded to a 911 call at a home at 722 Lester at 6:11 p.m. Monday, where the bodies and wounded children were found.
The wounded children- a 7-year-old boy, a 10-month-old girl and a 4-year-old whose gender wasn't immediately known, were transported to Le Bonheur Children's Medical Center.
According to hospital spokeswoman Jennilyn Utkov, the children were taken to the emergency room to be treated. No further information was available about their conditions.
Sources told Action News 5 the four adults found dead suffered from gunshot wounds, while two children were found stabbed to death. The three children found alive were also stabbed. All nine victims were found in the same room.
Neighbors identified the person living at the home as Cecil Dotson. Dotson's sister Nicole was frightened for her family members.
"You know when you come to stuff like this you think the worst," she said. "You think someone is dead. I am scared to death, all my nieces and nephews are in there and his baby mama and I don't know what's going on."
Though the bodies were discovered Monday night, it was unclear exactly when the murders took place. Neighbors in the area reported hearing a disturbance at the home over the weekend, including the sound of gunshots around 8:30 p.m. Sunday.
As news of the grisly find spread though the neighborhood, residents gathered in spite of the rainy weather to watch from afar as police conducted their investigation.
Homicide detectives could be seen speaking with relatives sitting in a car near the house where the killings happened.
"It's sad you come home to find out something like this has gone on," neighbor Leo Baker said. "I've been living here for 10 years. It's kind of sad, and scary too."
Baker said he didn't know the family living in the house.

WINSTON-SALEM -- Former Landis police Chief Charles Childers will serve more than 12 years in prison after pleading guilty to child pornography and Internet-related sex crimes.
Childers stood before a federal judge in Winston-Salem and begged for mercy on Tuesday। Childers could have been given up to 45 years for the child pornography crimes।----------------------------------------------------

"Stranger Danger" and Your Children

This is Important, ask your child's school when was the last time they had a "stranger danger" education awareness class. Maybe this is a good reminder to refresh their memories and yours.

What about your local church-how about asking them to post tips on kids safety in the bulletin this month.

Not a week goes by without a report of a child abduction, molestation, or a loved one who has turned up missing. An adult's worst nightmare can be minimized through proper safety tip education with a youngster about "stranger danger" and what to do to keep a loved one out of harm's way.

The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children offers the following safety tips for parents to discuss with their youngsters:

•Travel with a friend, or better yet, a group of friends when riding your bike or walking to or from school or other destinations.

•If a stranger offers you a ride somewhere, say no, and run away. Adults should define "stranger" and give safety tip examples to help youth, especially young ones, know what you mean.

•If someone follows you on foot, get away as quickly as you can. Find Local Sex OffendersSearch Over 400,000 known sex offenders for free.
Updated daily. http://www.childsafenetwork.orgGo to someone's house they know, or run to other people, or just teach them to run away.

•If someone is following you in a car, turn around and go in the opposite direction or take a path where a car would not go.

•Never leave school or any other extracurricular activity or event with someone who makes you feel uncomfortable. Moms or dads should tell their youngster that it is okay in these circumstances to not ride home, but that also means adults should have an established communications method along with these safety tip guidelines so that the kid does not end up stranded or alone.

•If a stranger tells you that there is an emergency or that a family member is hurt or that a pet has been in an accident, always check with your mom or dad or other trusted adults. This is a common trick used by many molesters or kidnappers.

•For more information about safety tips from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, call 1-800/843-5678.

Other general safety tips include:

•Grown-ups MUST establish "safe houses" where kids feel comfortable in knocking on their door at any time a situation warrants it. Be sure to get approval from the neighbors/homeowners first before designating a home as a "safe house." If possible, have a neighborhood safety tip meeting and have residents agree to watch after one another.

•Parents should not become lax about kids going to a friend's home in a neighborhood--even if it is only a few doors away. Snatchings can happen in an instant; even under a parent's watchful eye. The key is to keep an eye on a youngster when out front. Older youth should be instructed to call when they arrive at a friend's home for peace of mind and as a good safety tip practice.

•Never let kids play out in the front yard alone without direct supervision by an adult. There are too many opportunities for endangerment or other types of accidents. A back yard is a much safer, and more private, option.

•If at all possible, an adult should greet youngsters as they get off a school bus, and not have them walk home alone.

•Parents should be cautious about blatant use of a child's name on a back pack or jacket. Kids sometimes believe that a person can't be a stranger if they know them by name, when the reality is that their name was easily readable on their attire or the individual heard a youngster's name mentioned.

•Adults should understand that boys are at just as greatest of risk as girls. It is a common safety tip misconception that child molesters or perpetrators are typically men and seek only girls. Molesters come in all ages and both genders, and their victims can be of either sex.
