"Breathe Again- Surviving Rape" Today on the Susan Murphy Milano Show

It was a hot July night in 1985, and the Texas sixth-grader Lavina Masters had been sexually assaulted by an unknown suspect. This process -- collecting evidence for a rape kit -- lasted several hours was "devastating." But just as difficult, says Masters, was the 20-year wait for that evidence to yield results.

Lavina discussed in a recent interview with CNN how her rape kit sat idle until 2005, when the Dallas Police Department re-opened her case, as part of a new initiative to solve old crimes.

Please join us for a very special hour with Author and national safety prevention expert Lavinia Masters. And Lisa Fiorese Michels a board member with Project Meridian.org and a noted speaker on "Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome" and educating those whom often feel shame and embarrassment when the crime of rape is committed against them.

Can You Meet The Deadline?

Christopher Cooper raped and then murdered 9 month-old Monica Williams. He was sentenced to 30 years to life in prison. On December 1, 2009, Christopher Cooper will appear before the Parole Board in Ohio asking to be released because "he so very remorseful for a crime committed" 30 years ago.

While he sits with his hand folded before the parole board, he is clean shaven, his nails sparkling and bright, looking like a shiny new penny, asking to be forgiven, hopeful the parole board will grant him a second chance.

We, this means you and I, have the opportunity to see that Christopher Cooper remains behind bars. I realize it is easier to email a request or a letter of protest, but, in this situation, a letter mailed with a stamp and a return address will have the impact needed to keep this man from being released on our city streets. Should he be released he may not be required to register as a sex offender as the crime happened 30 years ago. Regardless this man needs to remain in prison.

This week you will be with friends and family. Copying and paste this letter from thise blog (below) and set ip a little table near the food asking your guests before they fill a plate with food to take the letter, sign it, place it in the envelope, have the guest put their return address on the front and seal. Then place stamps on them and mail the next day at your local post office. On Sunday at church ask members to help you, hand them an evelope with the address, and a copy of the letter and ask them sign and mail it, be sure they put a return address on the envelope. Pass this on to the blogs you visit, facebook and twitter and enlist everyone''s help.

There is not a lot of time, Christopher Cooper will be before the parole Board on December 1, 2009.

The Unsolved Murder of Brittany Phillips

Brutally raped and murdered, Brittany Phillips will never get the chance to experience her mother's warm embrace again. While away at Tulsa Community College, Brittany and her mother, Margaret Zingman, regularly talked every Monday and Thursday. These weekly phone calls would soon end the night a police officer knocked onDr. Margaret Zingman's door, to inform her that her daughter had been raped and murdered.

For Brittany's mother, such violence against her daughter is all too familiar. "All my work did not prepare me for the events of Sept. 30, 2004"

As a psychologist at Mabel Basset Correctional Center, and a trauma therapist for 17 years, Dr.Margaret Zingman could never imagine her personal experiences and work with other victims would run parallel with the death of her daughter. The stories she hears on a daily basis from the women she works with is now a harsh reality for her. Join us as we hear from a remarkable mother caravanning across the county to create awareness and “catch a killer.”

One Woman's Fight For Justice

Finally, Safe, begining her new life, a woman's right to live her life without the threat of violence makes the front page of the Chicago Tribune. On November 17, 2008, In a Will County Illinois Courthouse, this courageous woman will step foot in the courtroom, for justice. Below is the prepared for the judge, prior to the sentencing of her ex-husband John Samolis. A convicted felon for violating a court order of protection after his release from Stateville Illinois Correctional facility.

For years we were abused and battered by John Samolis. I didn't know how to get away and be able to protect my children. Then he raped me and beat me so severely the law put him away. That allowed me and my children to get help. It wasn't easy but it was much better than the abuse we had suffered. We've been in therapy ever since.

My children and I suffer from nightmares and anxiety. He had made us feel like we were nothing. He continues to threaten us. He's taken a huge part of our lives and terrorized us and tortured us. He took away our hope for a future.

Therapy has helped us immensely. But I will always look over my shoulder and fear him. I know he wanted to kill me. He has told me so many times.

He has an explosive temper and as the children grew he beat them, more and more. I've sat in therapy and listened to my son's tell about how they hid for hours under the dirty laundry to escape a beating from their father. They told the therapist how they were beat with video cables. His anger increased and escalated as the boys grew.

John was not just abusive he was also neglectful. A few weeks before my youngest son turned 3 he fell 3 stories while under my husbands care. Chase ruptured his spleen, kidney and had severe internal injuries. He almost died.

John Samolis was severely beaten as a child. I don't want my children to grow up to be like him. I could see the effect his abuse had on them. I wanted to leave but was afraid. I am still afraid of him, so are my children.

We lost our home, we had to relocate and had to file bankruptcy. Attorney fees have cost me thousands for the divorce and transport permission. Therapy has been very costly, though worth every cent. I am the sole support of my children. We live with my mother and stepfather who help me care for them.

It's been very difficult losing everything and moving. But with the help of family and therapy we are much better off and looking forward to the future. Nothing was as bad as the abuse.

Please help us, by making John Samolis accountable for his actions. Don't let him keep on ignoring the law. He has broken every OP. He thinks he can manipulate the system.

Please give us time to heal and grow as a loving family. Help me to protect my children, their safety is my highest priority. I want my children's voices heard. They deserve equality and freedom from abuse. Please look at the drawings they did for their therapist, please read the therapists letter. Please read my Victim’s Impact Statement and look at the Timeline of abuse.

I am proud of my children for having the courage to tell the therapist about the abuse they suffered. It is not their fault their father beat them and me. It's not my fault he raped and beat me and continues to stalk and harass me. You have the power to help stop this from happening again, please protect my children and me.

Officer Arrested For Rape Doesn't Smile for the Camera

(Deputy Jason Anthony Bill)

Today, Atlanta Deputy Bill was charged with rape, aggravated sodomy, aggravated assault, kidnapping, false imprisonment and battery.

According to the police report a woman was yanked out of a bar and forcibly taken against her will. She was handcuffed and tied up. The cowardly tin badge Deputy took her to an apartment and sexually assaulted her at gunpoint. She was able to escape, contact police and was treated at a local hospital.

When the arrest was made, Deputy Bill was immediately fired. Cobb County Sheriff Neil Warren released a statement Tuesday that said, "It was with a profound sense of outrage and betrayal that I learned of the actions and subsequent charges lodged against Deputy Jason Bill. This type of conduct is reprehensible under any circumstances but even more so when committed by a law enforcement officer. I have no tolerance for misconduct by anyone sworn to uphold the law and, as a result, have immediately terminated Jason Bill’s employment with the Cobb County Sheriff's Office."

Officer Jeff Pelo to Serve, Protect and Rape

A 17 -year former Police Officer, Jeff Pelo is found guilty by a jury in Illinois. He was convicted in the rapes of four women. Allegations going back from 2002. Prosecutors indicate that Pelo was careful not to leave behind evidence like semen, hair, or fingerprints.

The case was based on circumstantial evidence and witnesses who could place then ,Officer Jeff Pelo at each crime scene.

The rape of these women and the guilty verdict goes beyond victims having their day in court. For each rape victim "justice" is a dirty word. They must live with the permanent scars of their rapes, every waking hour of their lives. As do all rape victims. Until the day they die.

A trusted, appointed, lawman. Sworn to serve and protect. For these women the word rape has additional meaning betrayal. From the very system who failed to protect these women from men such as Jeff Pelo. The word rape also stands for:

Repeated- Assault- Police- Entry

In court a familiar song of sorts played out. And at one point during the trial Pelo's wife had an outburst in the courtroom "You've got the wrong man", she shouted.

The "Blue Blemish" is a reflection in a mirror into a system, that cracked long ago.

Becca McEvoy: Justice In Limbo

Former Police Officer Bob Ingel

The family of Becca McEvoy returns to court today in Mobile Alamaba fighting for justice for a little girl they say was raped by her police officer stepfather, Bob Ingel. Rebecca McEvoy, 11, was killed in a car crash last January.

Before she died, unexpectedly, Rebecca had been before the grand jury, testifying in hopes of seeking justice against this alleged sexual predator. According to prosecutors, a medical exam confirmed Rebecca had been raped, but Ingle's attorney is hoping a 2004 Supreme Court ruling will keep the case from ever going to trial.

Today, a Mobile County Judge is expected to decide whether a defendant can stand trial without having an opportunity to confront his accuser.
The lawyers are using the "Crawford" case out of Ohio. This says “you have the constitutional right to cross examine your accuser” and because the girl is dead and cannot testify, there is a chance the Judge may throw out the case. The Assistant District Attorney, Steven Giardini, believes the case law should not be applied in Becca McEvoy's case.

Justice For Becca McEvoy Interrupted

A child by the name of Becca McEvoy, allegedly raped by her police officer father, Robert Ingel. Tragically, while the grand jury hearings were happening Becca died in a car crash.

Becca had previously testified before the grand jury. There are medical records, statements and other documents that speak to the horrific crimes for which Mr. Ingel faces against this helpless child.

Now, Bob Ingels lawyers are once again attempting to interrupt justice in this case. They have asked a judge to put a gag order in place prohibiting others from speaking to the media while they await a decision in whether or not the case can be thrown out because the victim is dead.

You see, there is a little unknown law that says an offender has the right to face his accuser. Ingels lawyer's have asked the court to dismiss this case based the"Crawford" a Supreme Court case. The judge is expected to rule on May 20, 2008.In this case justice for Rebecca has already been interrupted. Bob Ingel remain's free on bond with the possibility of regaining employment in law enforcement and continuing his sexual activities with other minor children.

As the daughter of a violent predator who also happened to be in law enforcement, justice must be served in this case.

The number of professional experts advocating and following this case will not be silenced.

Defense Wants Gag Order In Child RapeJessica Taloney ReporterA judge is considering a motion to silence the family of an eleven year old girl, who they say was raped by her stepfather.Defense attorney Michael Harbin says pre-trial publicity will prevent his client, Bob Ingle, from getting a fair trial.Ingle, a former Chickasaw Police officer, is accused of raping Rebecca McEvoy for more than a year before she was killed in a car crash last January.Harbin specifically named WKRG in his argument, saying "only one side is getting out," but Harbin declined to do an interview. During an April 2nd hearing, Harbin and Ingle both entered and exited the courtroom through a backdoor, avoiding the media. Since her death, Rebecca's family has fought to make sure her case goes to trial despite defense argumentsthat Ingle has a right to confront his accuser."We are sitting here trying to defend our little cousin," said Rhonda Wheelus, who was in court for Monday's hearing. "She doesn't have a voice anymore. We have to be her voice now."Judge Michael Youngpeter presided over the hearing. Youngpeter said he will make a decision by May 20th
