In August 1972, 27- year-old Marine Sgt. William Miller returned toCamp Lejeune,North Carolina following a deployment in Okinawa. But when he arrived at the home he shared with his wife Vickie and Wendy, their 1-year-old daughter, he found that while he was away another Marine, George Hayden, had taken up residence in his house.

On Sept. 16, 1972, Miller received a call from his estranged wife to meet him onWestern Boulevard. Less than 20 minutes later, Miller was found dead in the street, shot twice with rounds from an M-16. A few days later, Hayden showed up at the neighbor’s house and took the alleged evidence Miller had collected against him. Detectives suspected Hayden of killing Miller, but couldn’t gather sufficient evidence for an arrest.

George Hayden, former Belhaven police chief, to be free man after conviction overturned

George Hayden, former police chief of Belhaven will be a free man next week. Hayden has been in prison for the murder of the husband of a woman he was living with at one time. The victims was killed on a lonely road in Onslow County late one night in 1972 and Hayden was convicted of the crime on May 26, 2010 and sentenced to life in prison.

The N. C. Court of Appeals ruled in June of this year that Hayden did not get a fair trial because the evidence presented against him was not sufficient to convict him. This week the N. C. Supreme Court refused to hear the state’s appeal so Hayden should be released from prison shortly.

Why is the State of North Carolina Giving Officer Involved Intimate Partner Homicide A Pass?

Amanda Graham Barker, 29, died from a gunshot wound to her head on August 10, 2011. Based on the position of the entry wound, according to sources, it is not possible for this mother of 2 to have taken her own life. Include the fact that her husband moved the body, using the excuse he was trying to administer first-aide, his story is, in my opinion, fabricated. Yet, the person in the home with whom Amanda was living, has yet to be arrested for her murder. Why? If this case did not involve a "well liked law enforcement officer," he would have already been charged.

Amanda's relationship with Kevin Locklear, a Police Captain with the Red Springs Police Department, was turbulent. According to sources, he was violent and threatening. Amanda did not feel she had options based on the police captain's prior history of assaults occurring with his former wife and his firing at that time as the Chief of Police in a town ten miles away.

Captain Locklear is fired from one department in 2007, only to be hired by another. That in itself is intimidating to victims of intimate partner violence. It speaks volumes to the "code of silence" in officer related crimes within their own relationships. After the 2007 incident, Behind The Blue Wall brought attention to the violent officers activities, predicting sometime in the future the bomb wound detonate again, if someone didn't do something to stop Locklear.

The police captain has been off work with pay since the murder. Initially, the "story" he told at the time on the crime scene was bogus. Later. the police captain would admit to a "rocky relationship." Because neighbors never heard the two shots fired or arguing in the sound proof home when the windows were closed, it was a slam dunk for the veteran police captain to say she committed suicide.

The state of North Carolina, in my expert opinion, has one hell of a dangerous individual, with full police powers, living his life as though he got away with murder.

As I stated in an earlier post: " I'm concerned with the confidence in the SBI analysts in the North Carolina lab conducting a proper investigation after last year's shake up with over 230 cases of mishandled evidence; and I do not want to see the "good old boy network" working from inside the blue walls and dismiss important evidence in the case that should include ballistics, personal computers and cell phones among other evidence at the crime scene."

Amanda Barker's children no longer have their mother. It is because everyone involved looked the other way, going back to 2007. Growing up in a home where the abusive person has police powers is the most frightening experience in the world. You have live this type of life to really understand it.

The murder of Amanda Barker was preventable. Not arresting the person responsible is a crime, and a violation of the Lautenberg Act. In case the State of North Carolina did not receive the memo on the law as it relates to law enforcement:

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) sent a notice to every law enforcement agency when this law went into effect. Police officers with prior misdemeanor convictions of domestic violence from years earlier were no longer permitted to possess firearms under the new federal law. Several officers were fired for such misdemeanor offenses committed before the law was passed.

The month of October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Intimate partner violence occurs 365 days a year, 7 days a week. Perhaps doing something for those whom you know are in a rocky or violent relationship is a start to how you can help others.

Laura Ackerson: A Heated Custody Battle and Intimate Partner Homicide

Laura Ackerson, from North Carolina, walked away from a violent and controlling relationship. The father of her two children kept her from friends and family during their time together. As with most victims of intimate partner violence, she was isolated from the world, and she was in a heated custody battle.

The last time she was ever seen was on July 12, 2011; then in a blink of an eye taken away. Her life abruptly ended, and the news confirmed, when law enforcement traveled to Texas on a tip and retrieved parts of her dismembered body that were scattered in a pond.

This beautiful mother of two will never again be able to kiss her children good morning or tuck them into bed at night, ever again. Sadly, we don't have to look very far for answers in these cases of intimate partner violence who "suddenly" goes missing that leads to homicide.

Two people were arrested and charged with her murder, the father of her children along with the person to whom he is currently married. They planned out the murder, how she would be killed, to the rental of a Uhaul trailer driven from North Carolina across state lines to Texas. The names of these 2 people, in my opinion, have no significance. They are simply cold blooded killers.

The solution to these crimes, before they turn deadly, is a prescription that incorporates the support of communities and a nation. We do not view intimate partner violence as a crime, even though laws were passed in every state making domestic violence and stalking a crime. Victims lives were lost in order for the law to get passed in each state. This means the ink used to sign the legislation by Governors across the country had a cartridge filled with the blood of those who died. A lot of victims had to die for proposed bills to be passed into law, including my mother, murdered by her Chicago violent crimes detective husband on January 19, 1989.

Not a lot has changed since I began working with victims and keeping them alive. The exception is more lives have been taken. How is that possible when we have so much in place? Services, shelters and tough laws are not enough for the victims of intimate partner homicide in today's world.

Those who abuse and take the threat further to murder believe they, the abuser, are invincible; often playing a clever game of "catch me if you can." Personally, living for 18 years in a crime scene allows you to witness firsthand the silence of the crimes, the offenders and the dynamics that take place behind closed doors.

Isn't it rather strange that the victim is often the mother of their children estranged wife or former girlfriend? And, more often than not, they are going through a divorce or custody battle. Where are Lisa Stebic, Susan Powell, Gail Palmgren, Kelly Rothwell, Angie Denise Tucker, Kimberly Langwell, Ida Dean Richard, Rachael Conger, Tracie Resiner, Stacy Peterson, Michelle Rust, Sandra Travis, Mary Badaracco, Star Boomer, Venus Stewart, Patty Vaughhan, Hope Meek, Tabitha Franklin, Jeri Duvall, Karen Joe Smith or Jacque Waller to name only a few?

Each of the aforementioned are currently missing, in my opinion, victims of intimate partner homicide.

Approaches to this deadly epidemic must be implemented if lives are to be saved. When a system continues to do the same old thing, the outcome will not change. As it relates to intimate partner violence, the prescription can begin with a training to prosecutors, law enforcement, mental health professionals, judges, hospitals and the community. The methods being taught in conjunction with the information located in the book "Time's Up" is not only saving counties across the country tax payer dollars, it is saving lives.

The Unsolved Murders of Mary, Michael and Jennifer Short

On August 15th, 2002, deputies found Michael and Mary Short dead shot in the head in their Henry County Virgina home.-- and their 9 year daughter Jennifer was missing.

It would be six weeks before Investigators found Jennifer's remains in Rockingham County, N.C. The child died from a single gunshot wound to the head.

That night someone may have seen something driving down route 220 Saturday August 15, 2002 and either may not thing something they could have witnessed is important – did someone see any unusual activity- a delivery truck in the area that might be suspicious? What about hearing shots fired that night? According to the Medical Examiner’s office the gunshot wounds were from a .22 caliber firearm. Further investigation revealed no signs of forced entry into the Short's home and no signs of struggle on the part of the victims. This led authorities to believe Michael and Mary were shot while sleeping.

According to the FBI an unidentified man was observed sitting in a vehicle along U.S. Highway 220 near the family's home the morning of August 15, 2002.The vehicle seen is described as a 1998-2002, white, single-cab, two-ton flatbed stake body truck with wooden rails.

The man, described as having a "weathered complexion," was reportedly seen seated in a 1998 to 2002 white, single-cab, two-ton flatbed body truck with wooden rails, according to the FBI. The truck was seen parked along U.S. 220, near the Shorts' home. The cab of the vehicle might look like a 4500 Series International Truck, according to the FBI's website.

Authorities continue to gather information from general contractors, independent contractors, construction companies, mobile home dealers, mobile home parts suppliers, mobile home transporters and/or mobile home salvage yard owners who had business dealings with Michael Short or M.S. Mobile Home Movers between Jan. 1, 2001, and Aug. 15, 2002. Before his death, Michael Short was trying to find employment as a mobile home mover in the coastal region of South Carolina. Investigators are seeking information from anyone who had contact with him about relocating to South Carolina.

It has been 9 years since the murders and police continue to ask for the public's assistance in coming forward with any information they may have to solve the triple murders. The motive is still unclear. One thing is for certain, the person(s) who committed the crimes is still out there. Is the person responsible living in your community? Do you have a suspicion you might know the person who killed this family? Are you afraid to tell anyone? You can call in a tip and it will not be traced back to you. All information and calls are kept confidential. So please if you know anything, help law enforcement by coming forward and telling what you know.
