Remaining neutral in cases where a law enforcement officer's wife is murdered under suspicious circumstances is often difficult.
A Georgia Deputy Sheriff arrives home early one afternoon to his very own crime nightmare.
His wife Linda Yancey, dead. According to the Deputy, it was an intruder.
I am not trying to single out this particular tragedy. Rather I am using it as an example into these similar types of crimes with a law enforcement officer's home.
Reports indicate the deputy killed the man. When emergency crews arrived they found a man and a woman murdered.
In any murder investigation, the truth is not always so simple. Especially, when both people involved in the crime cannot talk. Sometimes during an investigation when it involve's a law enforcement officer and their spouse, chances are the truth is likely reinvented.
It is important when the investigation spotlights a fellow "brother of the badge", proper procedures are carried out. Perhaps the DeKalb County Prosecutors Office can step up this investigation and involve the Detective's who investigated the death of Atlanta Police Sgt. George Parker's wife, Theresa Parker.
My strong opinion in all officer related crimes, an outside source must be brought in and investigate the tragedy. Not the same or neighboring police department with whom an officer has established a history, relationship and "silent code".

DeKalb deputy says he shot man who killed his wifeBy DAVID MARKIEWICZ This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it , APRIL HUNT This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
An off-duty DeKalb County sheriff's deputy shot and killed a man in his Stone Mountain home Monday after the deputy said the man shot and killed his wife, DeKalb police said.
The deputy was not immediately identified, nor were the victims.
Police received a 911 emergency call at 1:10 p.m. that there were two victims at the home at 5515 Mountain View Pass.
Derrick A. Yancey and Linda A. Yancey are listed as co-owners of the home where the shooting occurred, according to DeKalb County Tax Assessor records. They have owned the four-bedroom home since 1998.
Mekka Parish, public information officer for the DeKalb police department, said the deputy told investigators that the man shot and killed his wife, forcing him to kill the man.
"At this point, it is unclear if the man (the deputy) or the woman knew this unknown man," Parish said. "We are trying to ascertain two questions. Why was this man inside the home, and what are the details of what transpired?"

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. -- Two bodies have been discovered at a sheriff deputy’s home on Mountain View Pass in DeKalb County.
Police said an off-duty DeKalb County sheriff's deputy was home when he said a stranger entered his home and killed his wife, forcing the officer to shoot and kill the stranger.

"Once our officers arrived, they did find two people deceased inside, a male and a female," said DeKalb County police spokesperson Mekka Parrish. "According to the homeowner, an unknown man shot and killed his wife and he was then forced to shoot that unknown man inside his home."
Family members could be seen trying to console each other and had very little to say. "We have no comments, none at all. We don't know what's going on at all," said one woman on the scene.
Both DeKalb County police and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation were on the scene.

Hope the LEO has a good lawyer. The story will not hold up in the prosecutors office.
I am sorry, where does it say Derrick was arrested? Wait until the facts in the investigaton are completed. What happened to innocent until proven guilty? Do you even know the family? Take the broom handle and ride it complace else!
It very well could be a armed, dangerous man deputy yancey killed. I agree wait until police do thrir jobs.
I know the officer personally and I wish people would stop judging this all wrong and coming up with false accusations. He is a good guy, although all the facts are not known people seem to want to point the finger at the husband. What would you do if you were in the same situation (Perpetrator has a gun.. your wife is dead and been shot.. do you A. say what is going on here or B. shoot the guy who has the gun standing next to your dead wife.) Think about it.. I just wish more people would say my thoughts and prayers are with the family!
Being a relative of Derrick Yancey who just might have gotten away with murder is difficult to take-most murderer in law enforcement families ar great guys. Unless you live with an abusive officer or are a relative you can't possible understand.
I have an idea-wait before pointing fingers. Prayers to the kids and family.
Our thoughts and prayers are with Deputy Yancey and his family. He is an outstanding Sheriff who needs all of our prayers at this time.
No news here another husband kills their wife, sad, tragic & common
Derrick Yancey his family is going through a differnt period in their lives. We should respect and stop the gossip until we know what happened.
Were you there? Huh, what proof do you have Derrick Yancey committed any crime?
I read of this tragedy in the email news and send my condolences to the families' dealing with this. You remain in my prayers.
The public has read of some many of these tragic events and reached out to those left behind only to discover they were duped, and so instinct is naturally guarded while reaching.
I don't want to jump to conclusions so I'll wait until facts are out. But, I'd be less than honest if I didn't admit my very first thought was- I've read and heard of this scenario before.
Yancey hires a guy to do landscaping on the property. This is the man he killed in the house. It was no stranger just a poor excuse to "take care of his wife" for wanting to end the marriage.

[EXCERPTS] The DeKalb County sheriff's deputy who shot an intruder who he said shot his wife was arrested in November, 2006 for a domestic violence incident after an altercation with his teenage son, records show. Derrick Yancey, 46, was charged with simple battery and simple assault after an argument with his son over playing "offensive music," according to a police report. The teenager said Yancey hit him and threw his computer keyboard to the ground... The charges against Yancey were later dropped, according to county records. His son said he did not wish to prosecute... Both Yanceys worked for the DeKalb sheriff's office. Derrick Yancey is a 17-year-veteran deputy whose job was to transport inmates around the state. Linda Yancey had worked for the department for 13 years, first in the county court and most recently as intake officer in the juvenile court... Yancey and the couples' two sons, ages 8 and 18, are staying with relatives... Yancey is on paid administration leave. The Sheriff's Office will conduct an internal investigation to make sure Yancey followed procedures when he fired his gun.

Deputy had hired man he shot as day laborer

[Excerpts] The DeKalb County sheriff's deputy who told police he was forced to shoot an intruder who attacked his wife had brought the man into his home as a laborer, newly released records show... Neither the sheriff's office nor county police officials would comment on Yancey's arrests in April and November 2006, in separate incidents involving his son Karron, now 18... Yancey told police that his son hit him in the face when he tried to take away the teen's cell phone, as punishment for downloading "dirty music" on the family computer. A relative who was at the home called police, saying Linda Yancey said her husband chased their son out of the home with his pistol and threatened to "blow her son (sic) head off." Linda Yancey later confirmed the threat but said her husband was not armed when he made it. Yancey was charged with making terroristic threats. In November, Yancey and his son had another blow up over music. Yancey said he returned home to hear offensive music playing and confronted his son. The teen said Yancey hit him and threw his computer keyboard down, according to the report. Police charged Yancey with simple assault and battery. Although prosecutors dropped both cases, the Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training Council has an open investigation into Yancey on at least one of the incidents. Records from the council, a regulatory body for public safety employees, were not available Wednesday...

Really now who does this guy, a coward, liar, & murderer think he is? Oops w/ a badge & gun? Derrick is on his way to special bend over out of soap state prison.
And once again, as so often is the case, it is the children of this family who will suffer the most. Record shows he has a violent streak, and his children now are caught in the trap.
So very sad that this has to happen time and time again.
Police found a wad of $50 and $100 bills on the dead day laborer. Why would a man with that much money on him rob an innocent couple in their home. The silver revolver used also seems like an unlikely weapon for someone to just be carrying around.
Story has too many holes. I would like to hear the 911 tapes.
I think it's best to wait to judge what has happened here. I know Yancey personally and I cannot even fathom the thought of hime doing such an unspeakable crime as the one folks want to pressume happened. I hate that the domestic issues were even brought out because of his unruly teenager. WHOM DID reck havoc in his home and whose friends still RECK havoc in the neighborhood. One young man he used to hang out with was arrested on drug and gun charges. It seems those previous charges were a case of a father trying to discipline a child who did not accept it well....I know that people can click at any moment but this just seem sooooo unlike Officer Yancey...Look how lives can change in a split second. My prayers are with the families involved and the children especially the young boy that has to now grow up with out his mother...
Yancey's tale and trail of lies won't hold up.
I think Derrick is full of it. Their teenager was normal NOT a bad kid. A male child is not going to sit by and watch their mother being abused! He dropped the assult charges aginist Dep Yancey because of his mother. If he was so unruly he would have stuck it to Dep Yancey. That is the ONLY crime of the son. What husband PRESSUREs the wife at every turn to put their child out forcing her to make some difficult choices. What FATHER does not attend their child's High School Graduation. What Good, Decent person acts like Dep Yancey? Yancey is a poor excuse of a man and he deserves what he has coming! I feel sorry for the children and Linda did not deserve to die because she decided she no longer wanted to be with him. He was caught up into material things and he did not want to give any of that up. My prayers go out to Cam and Karron they are going to live without their mother.
Derrick was going to prevent Linda leaving anyway possible. When he first learned of her plans to end the marriage and file for divorce he went absolutely nuts. Derrick thought he planned the perfect crime. He had no inention of sharing what "HE" worked so hard far . He would set the house on fire first before he woulkd sell it in a divorce.
My heart goes out to Karron and Kameron. I had to learn about Linda's death sitting at a baseball game at Redan Park. I was speechless. Linda was a beautiful person and did not deserve what happened to her.
Well the facts in the investigation are complete and the outcome is what we all knew. Rest in peace Linda, Derrick is going to get what he deserves.
