On August 15th, 2002, deputies found Michael and Mary Short dead shot in the head in their Henry County Virgina home.-- and their 9 year daughter Jennifer was missing.
It would be six weeks before Investigators found Jennifer's remains in Rockingham County, N.C. The child died from a single gunshot wound to the head.
That night someone may have seen something driving down route 220 Saturday August 15, 2002 and either may not thing something they could have witnessed is important – did someone see any unusual activity- a delivery truck in the area that might be suspicious? What about hearing shots fired that night? According to the Medical Examiner’s office the gunshot wounds were from a .22 caliber firearm. Further investigation revealed no signs of forced entry into the Short's home and no signs of struggle on the part of the victims. This led authorities to believe Michael and Mary were shot while sleeping.
According to the FBI an unidentified man was observed sitting in a vehicle along U.S. Highway 220 near the family's home the morning of August 15, 2002.The vehicle seen is described as a 1998-2002, white, single-cab, two-ton flatbed stake body truck with wooden rails.
The man, described as having a "weathered complexion," was reportedly seen seated in a 1998 to 2002 white, single-cab, two-ton flatbed body truck with wooden rails, according to the FBI. The truck was seen parked along U.S. 220, near the Shorts' home. The cab of the vehicle might look like a 4500 Series International Truck, according to the FBI's website.
Authorities continue to gather information from general contractors, independent contractors, construction companies, mobile home dealers, mobile home parts suppliers, mobile home transporters and/or mobile home salvage yard owners who had business dealings with Michael Short or M.S. Mobile Home Movers between Jan. 1, 2001, and Aug. 15, 2002. Before his death, Michael Short was trying to find employment as a mobile home mover in the coastal region of South Carolina. Investigators are seeking information from anyone who had contact with him about relocating to South Carolina.
It has been 9 years since the murders and police continue to ask for the public's assistance in coming forward with any information they may have to solve the triple murders. The motive is still unclear. One thing is for certain, the person(s) who committed the crimes is still out there. Is the person responsible living in your community?
